Was home decided to clean up the truck and checking the truck out went to take any big rocks off the tire and found one that ate a little too far. You could definitely see the steel belt. What do ya’ll think ?I know if dot sees that I’ll get dinged for it. No air leaks so far. Not sure if filling it with some rubber compound would be good or if I would make it worse.

If I left it alone the rock would have eventually broken the belt and I’d have a flat.

i never heard of any liquid rubber compound, but then, i was never an owner. so if it does exist, i say patch the tire on the inside and then use that rubber filling. reason being, those steel cords may already have started to deteriorate from the constant pressure, and water/rain had already started the rusting process.

or take it off, put on a new one, and donate your lold one to the local zoo, and the gorilla exhibit. they like to toss tires.

Come on......common sense, tire has been compromised, replace it! Jeez, is your life/someone else's life or any other myriad of problems worth the cost of a tire? Really..............penny wise/dollar foolish

It might have, but usually the rock wears faster than the rubber around it. But in this and a lot of cases it wiggled with every revolution and for my money destroyed the tire. Once the cords are exposed, corrosion is going to get in there and spread. It will get rejected by any recapper.
It would take a real sharp inspector to see it. Stand in front of that tire when he is on his creeper....

true, looking at the pics, he hasn't got a lot of miles left to them.

may be the time to foot the bill for a full set of drives.

I ran a tire with a piece of rebar in it for another 7,000 miles before I pulled it. Just kept checking the air. Rebar wore down flat to the point it disappeared. BUT that was when I was first starting out and was young and dumb and had to to push limits because of limited $$$. As soon as I got some money in the bank I decided those kinds of risks were potentially too expensive.........
And I never met a DOT man that could count past 10 without taking off a shoe...........

Ffx95,.........You made two posts. By reading your posts it's clear to me you already knew the answer to your question....
First, I'm assuming you're O/O, and you're watching money close, good for you, smart man! (woman)
    So,
1.) Run the tire with the rock in it. As"Studebaker Hawk" pointed out, the rock will wear down faster than the rubber. You might have milked another 5000 miles, or more, BUT you run all the risks involved and sidelined on the Interstate with a blown tire is not fun and very $$$, compared to just replacing the tire in shop, ... crap shoot, roll the dice.........
2.) Be 100% certain and replace it, problem gone. Gonna cost bucks but it all boils down to YOUR level of risk tolerance. ..............
But, from my experience (20+) years........if you had left the rock in place you could have risked it, milked it for a while.
How long was the rock there before you were even aware? You've been running on it how long? Once you pulled the rock out, it's replacement time.......too far compromised at that point...........
But be honest with yourself.......You're a smart man (woman),.... you knew instinctively the tire was compromised when you saw it, right? Just didn't want to part with some $$$ right now and the time involved to replace it......
Been there, done that and so has thousands others.........
Bottom line,.... your choice, your decision, your responsibility, right?, ...you gotta own your decisions, right?
Sincere best wishes for continued success.......

    Ffx95 Thanks this.
