Hello boys and girls. I just wanted to share this with you just for entertainment purposes. Some of you will laugh, some of you will be enraged. But it should initiate some good dialogue.

So I called TQL for a load going from Channahon IL to Channahon IL. It is a pick at 11:00 tonight, with 3 drops: Grand Rapids MI, Jackson MI, and back to Channahon. Total mileage about 550. So she asks me for my rate. I told her, "$1500."

She replies, "I can only do $900."

I nearly spit out my Honey Nut Cheerios.

I said, "It's an overnight run with 3 drops. Are you for real?"

She said, "It's only 548 miles."

I said, "Yeah, and you're not even offering 2 bucks a mile! Do you actually have idiots that take these loads?"

    "Yep!"

I just hung up on her.

I don't deal with them unless the load has to ship within a few minutes. I hate how most of those reps act, always act like little snotty brats. I think they are the worst company I have dealt with as far as people go.

    i got a load for $5.88/mile equivalent.
    $1000 for 170 loaded miles.

“Judge, how do you do it, we wanna be like you when we grow up.” you say.

It’s easy, go talk to broker in person, then start taking off your shirt and strutting and dancing while singing Rod Stewart’s song..,

    It works for the Judge.

The ladies in the office love it, I always get good rates, sometimes without having to dance, just walk in and give a little wave and they got a good load ready.

I've hauled for them a few times and have made out well. Sometimes over $3 a mile. But other times they just want to lube you up.

Every broker has different customers. This guy just has a cheap one, and carriers are taking those loads if that is what they offer and will not budge.

For context. I cover a particular lane for 1000-1100. Port load so there is a gate fee. Our customer pays us 1200. I post the load on a Saturday with no rate and get a call from a carrier who has his TWIC card for the port, it takes them home, and they are a good reasonable carrier for us. Dispatchers asks for 900.... come to find out this carrier also runs direct for the customer and they get these from 900-1000.

My point is most of these customers know exactly what carriers are taking these loads for so its almost impossible to get better rates from my end. So when carriers expect me to pay 1500 on that lane, they can thank those guys taking it for 900 for why i cant pay them what they think is fair.

Of course. Carriers that are willing to haul for peanuts are the single biggest reason why rates are where they're at. Freight HAS to be moved. If everyone said, "I will not haul for less than $3 a mile," then guess what? The rate will HAVE to come up to $3 a mile. It doesn't matter how the economy is doing, or how much capacity there is. The freight MUST move. The increase in shipping cost will just be passed on to the consignee, who will then pass the cost onto the ultimate consumer.
