I have been hearing lately that people are using crude oil trailers to haul Ethanol. The benefits is it is way way cheaper to buy a crude oil trailer and spend ~1,000 dollars to retrofit it with a rack control module.

One con I can think of is that you only have one compartment so you cant haul multiple types of fuels. If that isn't a deal breaker then you can add a trailer to your fleet for something like 20 thousand dollars less.

Has anyone else heard or considered this? What are your thoughts?

Haulers are absolutely doing this. You are correct about the con. Search for "how to convert a crude tanker trailer for ethanol transport" and there is some good information available.
