Have any of you guys ever swapped out tanks or added an additional tank to a used truck? I have a couple of older trucks (one is my personal truck and the other is used for short haul/regional work) that I plan on keeping for a long time. The problem is that they both have small fuel tanks (twin 90 gallons) and only about 150 or so burnable gallons. I want to either swap the existing tanks with larger ones or add a third tank ( have plenty of rail space on the frame to do this). Have any of you done either of these? Where can I find either new or good used tanks at a decent price? What kind of price would I expect to pay for a tank(probably 150 gallon capacity)? Any other advice you have to offer on this subject would be appreciated. Thanks Guys and Gals.

When you find your nearest truck wrecking yrd you'll have pretty much every thing you need.

Any halfway decent truck wrecking yard will have tanks, and the straps and brackets needed to mount them to your frame. Just a matter of going down to the wrecking yard and crawling around a bit until you find the right ones. Stick to aluminuim tankes though, since they tend to be immune to internal rust and corrosion, which can be a problem if they have been siting for a while.

But, if you have the capacity you already have, running regionally, do you really need to add the extra weight of additional fuel to the trucks? I run regionally, have twin 100's (about 90 gallon draw) on the truck, and can easily run 1000 miles without having to even think about stopping for fuel. That gets me anywhere I have ever needed to go. I can fill up in Chicago and run as far as dallas if need be, or run from Chicago to the east coast and almost halfway back before fueling.

Weight is not an issue as our outbound loads average about 10,000. My truck is used OTR, so yes larger capacity would be nice. The other truck wouldn't matter much, just figured if I was going to do one, I may as well do both.

Just curious, What would you guys estimate the weight of the tank itself to be?

I would ASSUME a 150 would be 100 to 200 lbs, but honestly have no idea at all.

Well, I have a steel 50 gallon tank I yanked off an old tractor I was junking out, and i can pick it up and carry it around by myself. It currently serves as the fuel tank for the old snowplow truck, after the main tank developed a leak somewhere.

I also have a 150 gallon steel flatbottomed semi tank off a Louisville I bought for 5 bucks at an auction years ago that I use for diesel fuel for the farm equipment, and it can be moved by me by hand, but not picked up. Aluminum tanks should be considerably lighter than they are.

It would be a long day trip there and back, but Adelman's in Canton Ohio would have the tanks you are looking for. They also have a yard now in Chicago, as well, if that's any closer.

    Canton is 1-800-643-2001

    Chicago is 773-734-0570

Another one you might check with is Baskins, located on 51 about 25 miles north of Memphis on the south end of Covington. They used to be a farm equipment/truck wrecker, and now are almost solely involved with trucks and truck sales. And a lot of the stuff on their lot should be parted out, rather than be soled to some unsuspecting buyer. LOL!

I bought a new pete once and had the dealer remove the passenger side box and put an extra 90 gallon tank inaddition to the dual 120's that was on it. That was a sweet setup if you can spare the weight. But I have no idea what they charged us todo that anymore. plus I had to take the truck to Oklahoma and have the light bars custom made at the factory since at that time they didn't sell anything that fit, they had to notch them to clear the straps
