While I'm waiting to start school I started working on a resume. Everything looks good except I have one of those gaps that employers don't like.
I won't lie to an employer but I do want to chose my words carefully.
The facts:
-I was throwing 80# boxes of paper, as many as a dodge caravan will hold in a day
-that was 3/4 my body weight at the time
-got a nasty case of sciatica
-hubby said quit working till it clears up
-never filed any claims, no workers comp, no unemployment, nothing
-was off work 1 year
-company is now out of business, I hear the owner went back to OTR
This is within the last ten years, so I know I have to list it. Any suggestions how how to present it in the best possible light?
Thanks

So, In three words or less, why did you have this gap (of one year??) ? Unemployed? Housewife, stayed home to care for kids? Self-Employed? Whatever the case, you need some kind of proof. What the old dude said, Don't sweat it too much.
-
Most companies will have an affidavit you will fill out with the dates of non-employment, explain what you were doing during that time, and a couple of personal references you put down w/addresses and contact #. You state that you haven't worked for any carrier during that time and sign it.
-
You will just need a notarized letter stating what and when you were doing during these times of unemployment. Its more of a federal thing than a company policy. You must show exactly what you have been doing for the last ten years. Uncle Sam wants to keep his eye on you...
-
Just don't mention the back problems. Say you were burnt out and took time off to stay home and handle the home affairs.
-
With the economy the way it is, when someone has a gap in employment recently I have been accepting "I was unemployed." as a reason. Whatever your reason may be, they will probably give you a paper to fill out and ask for people you know to verify it in writing.
Lonesome Thanks this. -

No, I wouldnt say burned out exactly, more like it was a family decision to try that package handling as part of a get out and make a certain amount to pay bills time. You did it, and then for family reasons,(your personal business)proceeded to return as full time homemaker(you did, right)in one form or another?
Applications and resumes are not a truth must be told pieces of paper, rather a chance to tell your work "story"
What you say is real, someone else could say is blarney, whos right?
Id never let some corporate made rag and or official resume dictate whether I suddenly was less than truthful, and trust me, many recruiters don't exactly want or expect that at all, minus the basic drivers record which is separate, and the criminal check, which again is another separate piece of paper.
Good Luck! -
Thanks, all. I did stay home. I did all the normal housewife/ mom stuff. I did go back to school during the last few months of my sabbatical. It was 2004.
It's going to be hard to prove, the company is out of business, the owner took off, hubby is deceased. I wouldn't know how to prove it, unless my mother wrote a letter.
I really hate to say it was back problems because everybody who threw paper had back problems. I've not had any back issues since.
I still don't know what I'm going to write there.
ETA: I did do some volunteer work during that time, maybe I could throw that in with the schooling? I don't like being misleading. -
There's your answer right there. You took off to spend more time with family and go back to school (Neither are lies) and while you were at it you did a little volunteer work.
