I love looking at some of the vintage truck pics T/A plasters at their restaurants.

But all I know is the modern T/A-Pilot era.

I kinda started thinking, what was it like back in the days when truck stops had bars, small hotels, etc.

Most of the independent shops I've seen look like they haven't been updated in a decade, but once upon a time they were new, what did they look like then?

And although I doubt anyone has a pic of this, what were the showers like in the 40's? 60's? 70's?

If anyone has some Vintage Truck Stop pics, post them here.

I got a couple hundred off the Smithsonian website years ago, they might be around here somewhere, might be in MT, though. I think they were up due to a Transportation exhibit at the time, I don't see them now, but they have a few.

None of showers or interior details, but exteriors, equipment, and truckers and dock workers. They're hilarious. Guys in uniforms w/ties, with those floppy wool hats with the hard shiny plastic bills. Everybody depicted inside a trailer/handling cargo was black. Truck stop with 2 pumps, attendants in white coverall uniforms, didn't look much different than a '50s gas station.

I think the old FJ in Great Falls might still be open and representative of ~vintage showers: smaller than a phone booth, curtain a foot too short/half a foot too narrow and constantly on the attack, 1 towel better suited as a napkin, water pressure; dribble.

    Ah, the good ol' days.

    Here's a pretty good source: http://www.hankstruckpictures.com/

I bought a book of old truck stop photos at some book store years ago. Barnes & Noble if I remember correctly. It's packed away now since I moved.

haha...glad I'm not the only one who feels like the shower curtains are trying to get me! What is that all about anyway? My shower curtains at home never stalk me like that.

There's a site called shorpy that has a lot of very high res pictures of everything, some about trucking. You can also search for pics by a guy named Jack Delano. He's got a lot from the 40's along US1 that show some truck stop diners and stuff.

gpsman, BUZZSAW and Infosaur Thank this.

Yea that truckstop above, I used to play in the field to the right of it as you look at it when I was a kid about knee high to a grasshopper. They put 20 right through my playground!LOL Dad was a big time O-T-R driver and wouldn't get home but 2 or 3 times a year and wed meet him at that truckstop when he did come in. This was very early 60s (maybe even late 50s?).
