Loosened up the fan belts to replace on my 99 KW T800 with DDEC4 12.7 Cant seem to get them worked over the fan and get them off. Do I need to remove the fan to replace the belts or do I need to play with it a little more until they come? I have a hard time seeing how they will go without removing fan...

Once you got the belt loose and sitting around the hub, just take the belt and slip it over the end of each fan blade. Easy. Changed hundreds of belts like that. There should be no reason to take a fan off to change belts.

You're.right, you shouldn't have to take the fan off,but on my 99 you will because the belt isn't long enough to slip over the fan blades. I have changed a lot of them myself on several different brands of engines & that was the first time I ever had to remove the fan.

Flipping a V-belt inside out will give you a little more room. I used to see many people take the damper off a 3126 to change the water pump belt. They'd think I was crazy when I told to just flip the belt inside out and it'll just fit over the damper, but it works. V-belts have nylon cords in the spine, the thicker V part is just rubber. Flip it over and put the thicker part on the outside and it frees up some room.

I did not know that. I'm gonna try that on the next PITA one I come across.

My 99 also has serpentine belts instead of v belts. One short one off the crank to the fan hub,one off the fan hub to the alternator & one off the accessory drive for the ac compressor.

My truck has 2 sets of v-belts. One set for the accessory drive, and one for the fan. Acc. drive runs A/C and alternator. The set for the fan are pretty small belts and just go from the pulley on the crankshaft to the fan. I ended up removing the four adjustment bolts, the adjusting bolt, and the air line off the bottom and pulled the fan assembly away from the motor enough to get the belts off. With 2 people, was pretty easy and probably less than a 30 minute job. Have a very hard time believing there is a way to get those belts over that fan....
