Well I replaced the u joint as the old one was worn right out. Steering is nice and tight now but my steering wheel is backwards. There's a arrow on the column above the bearing by the grease fitting but none on the part that slides inside. I take it this is how to line it up. How can I get this straightend out. Kwt800

Remove the yoke from the steering gear input shaft.
Separate the slip yoke and rotate 180 degrees, reassemble.

helps if you straighten your wheels first before disassembly, it took me 3 attemts, to get mine correct, when i changed both of mine.

You're lucky. I was told by Pete that you can't just replace the Ujoints but shaft assemblies that have the ujoints.

    BINGO!

Next time make sure the wheels are straight and take a parts marker and mark all parts in a line and when its time to reassemble line the lines back up.

In the world of big truck truckin' - it's always best to take a punch and put a couple of marks on the parts you need to reassemble in exactly the same position you took them apart. Edit, or what 379 Pete said - a marker works just as well.

I was kind of miffed that you are working on steering gear and coming on here to ask a question with an obvious answer. Attention to detail is of great importance when working on steering and brake components. A forgotten cotter pin can kill someone.

Another thing is before you take it apart also look to see where you want the zerks to be. It will make it alot easier to grease later.

    Gears Thanks this.
