Hello everbody
I have an out of the park question. Has anyone ever rented a tractor/trailer for personal use, i.e moving household goods? I have held a CDL-A for ninteen years, but have not driven for a carrier in about eight. I have no doubt that I can walk into my local Ryder or Penske (having done business with both) and rent something, but making the trip would certainly raise flags with DOT and any chicken coops I would need to cross. I guess I'm more concerned about how legal are you, not running under an authority, per se, being its your personal property. I am curious to know everybodys thoughts on the matter.
I have rented straight trucks (w/air brakes) in the past for stuff locally, but never a tractor/trailer.

It's not concidered a commercial or HHG move. Private, "Not for hire" so not regulated.
Just make #### sure you put something on the side of the truck that says to that effect.wadboy73 Thanks this. -
If ever in doubt, check with your local DOT and explain your situation to them. I would assume that rules & regulations made for commercial carriers would apply to you regardless of what you are transporting - you are still driving a vehicle that is required to have a CDL driver.

I would certainly be covering my bases as far as driver regulations go. Log books, pre-trip insp's, etc.

Not for a private move. You are not in a commercial operation.Dharok and cetanediesel Thank this. -
I would cover all bases as well but Im not sure you even need a CDL at all. From Michigans CDL Manual under the The following people do NOT need a Commercial Driver License (CDL): Section .
INDIVIDUALS: Operating motor homes or other vehicles used exclusively to transport personal possessions or family members, for non-business purposes.
Better safe then sorry. -
Why not just call (IIRC) R&L Carriers? I think its them that will drop a mt at your door then pick it up and move it to the new location and drop it. Gotta be cheaper than you renting both and it sitting idle while loading/unloading plus no hassles at coops!
