‘87 379 had a rear driveline mishap today and I tore into it and it has a cracked inner race on the front drive output shaft bearing. I removed the snap ring and was wondering about the best way to remove this bearing? IMG_5108.jpeg

Ok, initially I was told to remove the snap ring, then take a pair of heel bars and pop the bearing cup out. Tried that but no luck and couldn’t ever get the heel bars in there like I envisioned. Called another mechanic and told him what I was told and he said that works on the later model 379’s with different axles and rears. Mine is an ‘87 and it was suggested to remove the rear cover of the front drive and I should be able to get to the bearings. Any thoughts, suggestions or advice?

I agree if you are not pulling the diff out. Pulling the rear cover will be the best way to replace the bearings.

Took the cover off and the bearing came with it. Shaft stays in. Bearing was barely still in the cage. What I thought was a cone and cup bearing but it was just a typical squared edge roller bearing. IMG_5127.jpeg
