I am replacing the fan belt on a older cat 3406. The belts are the ones that go from the crank to the idler
pulley. I don't see any other way to get them off. Should I mark where the balancer is and put in back
    in same position?

    Thanks

IIRC unbolt the the fan hub from the engine and lean it against the rad. A sheet of heavy carboard will protect the fins. And change the belts that way. Its a bit of a pita. A second set of hands helps lol good luck.

I have to literally remove every hose from the rad and ATA, unbolt the radiator, lean it forward (a lot) remove the fan from fan clutch, totally remove the fan clutch with hub and everything AND STILL is hard as hell to replace the two belts.

The guy I bought the truck from took pretty good care of it. Now I know why he
let the belts go for so long .lol

Can't just unbolt the fan and slip them out around the fan hub? I've yet to encounter a truck or a machine that requires removal of the balancer or fan hub. Worst I've had yet only required the removal of some guards and the fan.

Not sure what truck the OP has but I agree with @NorthernMechanic. On my long hood Pete I just have to remove the bolts from the fan. Looks like a worse job than it is

I can only speak from my experience that its faster to drop the hub assembly than to remove the fan inside the housing. At least on my truck anyways. The first time my mechanic did it i thought he was crazy too. That was 15 years ago and I've seen him and other good mechanics do it numerous times the same way. Thats on a 379 ex hood with a 3406e. But there's more than one way to skin a cat lol

I've never had much trouble pulling a fan. If you can fit an air ratchet in there you're golden. If not a guy can usually have it unbolted in a couple minutes with a small flex head ratchet. I'm not a very big guy so its easier for me to deal with a fan rather than an entire fan hub.
