Ive been working with a carrier as a lease operator and I finally finished making all the payments. They gave me the title and said I need to register it under my own business name, get an IFTA account and get my own physical dmg insurance policy. I live in FL and plan to register it under an inactive DOT I’ve had for a while now, but I don’t have an MC number though. I still plan to drive the truck under that company’s authority that I’ve been working with this whole time. Does all this make sense? How do I register IRP in Florida? I can’t find anything online. Any advice is greatly appreciated.

If you’re going to stay leased on to the carrier your inactive DOT # means nothing, as in forget about it.

Kind of crazy that they want you to get your own IRP and IFTA..but, whatever.

I’m located in Florida and can give you some guidance, links etc.

First, what state is the current title in? This is the first pia dealing with Florida..

Getting your own ifta & irp is a good thing. It puts it all in your hands. Now you don’t have any worries about needing a hunters permit or anything of the sort to move the truck between carriers. It also helps you manage your expenses because they aren’t charging you for these services.

As mentioned above, it's wise to get your own IRP and IFTA. Especially if you're going out on your own eventually. However, you'll still have to use your Carrier's Liability insurance and MC to get them and once you activate your own numbers you can just switch over the MC/insurance details then.

I know here in New Jermany you need to prove residence to open IRP/IFTA accounts.

After the DOT aborted 'registrant only DOT numbers for owner operators and deleted those given out; here at least, independents need the carrier's DOT and Tax ID numbers which are listed on their registration as 'motor carrier responsible for safety'.

They under estimated the number of actual independents until the new DOT number generator fried....

Ifta is the easy part but you will have to travel to Tallahassee. You sign a paper, pay $8? and you’re done. Apply for the E-file as soon as you get everything else done..don’t wait or you will be filing out your quarterly taxes manually..
takes a month or more for them to activate it.

When you go to Tallahassee get there early and plan on spending the entire day there. There are a couple 3rd party places in state but they only issue tags and not ifta.

First thing you need is a sunbiz account with your business listed.. A FEIN # if you don’t have one already.

Next you need to take care of the title work with the tax collector. You can do it in the Tallahassee complex but I advise you to go to your county office.

If original title is from another state you must have a VIN / odometer check done..you will get nowhere without it done. Any Law enforcement agency, Florida dealership or notary can do it for you.

Florida is a pia to deal with so buckle up!
