Before I start making calls I figured I would ask in here if anyone has done this. I'm done trucking but did not sell my truck or flatbed.....YET.
I would like to register my truck so I can drive it around but not sure if that's possible. I was under the impression I could just register it as a pickup truck or regular vehicle. I've heard all sorts of stories like I have to remove the 5th wheel plate, can't go out of the state and other stories.
So, anyone done this?

There are millions of private carriers is that what you mean? I think removing the fifth wheel is intended to knock down the weight rating so you are not a "commercial vehicle" under the regs anymore. Insurance will be higher than a car. IFTA means no out of state without a trip permit. If there is a sleeper you might register as RV and not even need a CDL I think you can tow a full size trailer even as long as the whole thing is RV I think. If you have some land you might look into farm plates.
Interesting to see what others who might know more will say. Good luck.Skate-Board Thanks this. -
Check with your states DMV. In my state I can pull anything I want with my 4500 as long as it's my stuff and I stay under 26,001. Truck was reregistered with a 26,000 tag.

You can do it but if it still has three axles be prepared to buy a fuel permit wherever you go. That's why you see a lot of farmers and horse people with a sinlge rear axle.
hartleytrucking and brian991219 Thank this. -
I insure my Pete with Ag plates (farm use only), cost was a spit over $700 for Ins & reg was $287 I believe......Strictly for our farm use= no IFTA, no HUT, no IRP.....

Say...
Private recreational vehicle ... Take all your numbers off the truck and your good. That came from the IRP in concord.....the fifth wheel is fine, just the signage has to go.
Not sure about the flat tho....Last edited: May 16, 2016

Not for hire is a must so you can roll by the scales.
Fuel might be dicey, be very careful with that. But as a RV even if it is just a sleeper? Go for it. At one time Ive plans to do that because you can pick up a older sleeper tractor for less than what it takes to get a used car these days. Fuel mileage irrevelant and that sleeper will come in handy. Historical tags might be a another thought. Rating for your license probably wont matter anymore except maybe the air brakes endorsement.
Those are my thoughts. Arkansas probably does registered retried ex CMV as private vehicles but does not go out of it's way to encourage that. But in time I will be looking into that, Ive some traveling planned around the USA and it will be excellent for that once the ballast is put on and the insurance is settled.
