Anyone ever refurbish a kingpin? Kingpin Specialists is quoting me $1,500. Is it worth it and do they last?

i can weld one in myself for not even half that but there’s the risk of compromising the plate strength after all the cutting and welding

i never heard of such a thing.

given what a kingpin does, i'd want brand new.

    Yeah

Definitely not something to try and save money on .
Get it done right by someone who knows what they are doing .

This is kinda like rebuilding a fifth wheel vs just buying a new one.

The answer is kind of self explanatory.

seeing as many pictures or videos like many here have seen, of a tractor hanging off a bridge, i'd put more faith in a new kingpin, than a refurbished one..

the chances of anyone actually hanging over a bridge is slim, but does anyone wanna gamble...????

this is what the state lottery is for.........with your $2.00

    not our lives.

hope not dumb twucker Thanks this.

Nothing wrong with rebuilding a fifth wheel, all the fifth wheel manufacturers offer a rebuild kit.

I had a fifth wheel rebuilt and never had a problem with it, new jaws and hardware installed into the original top plate.

Now the king pin is a whole different story.

If you’re going to weld a new king pin in, the person that’s welding better know what they’re doing.

You’d rather cut out a pin and weld in a new one, where you rely on the person doing it to do it properly and not compromise the entire plate on the trailer, versus having someone come to you and refurbish and machine what is already on the trailer?

That describes the whole process and should put doubt to rest for those unfamiliar with how it’s done.

There's a whole lot of things I'd be half arsed on and repair myself, kingpin isn't one of those.
Get a pro to do it. And $1,500 ain't that much money......in the grand scheme of things

    uhh...yeah.......

that OLD king pn has been thru a lot over it's life.

who's to fully guarantee it doesn't have a stress crack, that cannot be seen by the naked eye..???

the "inspection" only says for a bolster plate ultrasound......

what about the rest of it..??

    hairline cracks can be missed.

again, age, and usage to me dictate full replacement with new.

    saving a few dollars..?

    sounds foolish

If you actually read my original post you’d notice I wasn’t inquiring about saving money lol
