used to -10 was for ice cream loads.
no can’t do start/stop, they have temp that it’ll go down a few degrees then kick back in, other may vary from -10 to -2 continuous wants cold air continuous air

If you can't afford to cover what little fuel it takes to run continuous you might be doing something wrong. What if your unit fails to restart on cycle?

Summer time there bud I'd keep it on continuous run, the product will maintain its temperature provided it was loaded from the warehouse at the right temps and your reefer is run at the set temperate and maintains it constantly. For a product to remain frozen it theoretically would need to stay under 32 degrees F. Most warehouses will do a temp check on the product so it is important that you follow the instructions carefully. Where issues sometimes arise is no one bothers to do a temp check on the product when it is loaded and the poor transporter/ driver get blamed for it if the temps turn out to be warmer by the receiver.

Doesn't matter whether or not it'll hurt the product. What matters is whether or not the potential temp recorder and the reefer download comes back okay if product is rejected for some reason. Maybe they rejected it for reasons not related to start/stop versus continuous, but when the reefer download shows it wasn't set correctly, it'll be your all's claim.

Back when I did reefer my company had a strict rule to not use continuous mode unless a shipper or con specifically requested it in writing or had it as a posted rule when picking up or dropping off the load. Their take was that continuous mode uses too much fuel to run the reefer and sentry mode (start/stop) got the job done and used less fuel.

I would suggest to go with what's on the BOL because it's in writing.

All brokers will say continuous for every load. I remember one told me that was company policy. When I was with another company, i ran it start stop and told the broker it was on continous. I was hauling frozen bakery products. Frozen carrots, you really don't need to run continuous. The broker will tell you one thing, but the shipper will tell you something else. Rule of thumb is you go by what the shipper/bills say when you load.
