Hi friends! I'm driving a Volvo VNM 630, I think. I don't know the year... probably a 2012 or so. (That might be another question for this forum...where do I find the year?)

Anyway, the last time I was in at our company shop the mechanic turned on these red interior lights near my feet. Now they're on sometimes, off sometimes and I have no idea how to control them. Does anyone know where the switch is? (The user's manual is useless on this and most other questions I have had.)

Usually the on/off button is on the light itself.
Manufacturing date is on the information panel on the inside of the driver door (white rectangle sticker, open the door and look about half way up on the edge of the door, close to the latch)

OR you can look at your cab or insurance cards

I have them on my 2014 Volvo 670. Mine have a on/off button on it...I like them off wither or not I have the door open or closed. and its fine until I accidentally hit the button with my foot and turn it on.
If I bump it on while door is closed then I just click it off but then it seems to come on again when I open the door and then I have to press the button one more time and then i'm good til I accidentally bump it again. I think it might be a 3 way kind of switch. 1 click for it to be off always, another click to turn on while door is closed, and if door is open, a click, and then it will light only when door is opened... i think..Stupid to make it red...doesn't do anything for me as a red light....perhaps if it was white, I may have it set on for when door is opened...maybe.....ok probably not....lol

    Thanks, DL, for both answers!

I found the year of the truck on one of the stickers you mentioned, inside the door. There are three or four of them. I looked at the top one that's turned sideways and it had it... 2013!

And yes, I found the button on the lights themselves. They seem to be a 3-way switch, and I'm not sure what all three positions do, but I got them to turn off, which is what I needed.

    Thanks a million!

Thanks, Damaged! Yeah, I was playing around with it. For me two of the three positions didn't turn the light off even if the door was closed, which confused me. But anyway the one you mentioned, where it's off all the time, is what I really needed. Now I have my blessed darkness.:) thanks!

Yes it's a multi function switch (1 constant on 2on w/ open door 3 off)
The red light is to save your night vision when driving at night due to the red filter being less harsh on eyesight in low light situations. Allot of night owl truckers run with the red filtered lights to be able to see in the cab while driving without being blinded in the dark. Some even use it while driving to help keep them alert on that lonely 650+ mile run in the dark ( I hear blue lights work well for the same)

    @dlloydking

Neurologically, relating to the eye: red lights are the best for not interfering with cones (the eyes light receptive neurons). Red wave lengths active rods (another type of neuron in the eye). Rods are primarily responsible for peripheral and night vision scenarios.
Green lighting has been used at night because it doesn't interfere with the cones (much) and it increases acuity over red light.
Blue and white are the worst to use because it activates the cones and F's up your night vision.

I've written about this elsewhere... be ###### if I recall where tho.

Note to self blue is bad, got it
I appreciate the lesson, always a good day when you learn something new.

Now that Makes a whole lot more sense, every time I get a eye full of those new fangled blue headlights I'm done for a good couple seconds. Never did understand how blue would work even though I hear it allot.
I just got sent back to school, literally I haven't seen those words since high school lol
