So my steering gearbox on my 07 Volvo 670 leaks a little. if I stop moving at the end of the day there maybe a quarter sized stain. I priced the gearbox at 2300 for a new one. a rebuilt one for 1230 . and it will cost me around 730 to have it rebuilt away from the dealership. any opinions.

I just had one rebuilt on a western star for about 650.00, ours was leaking about 1/2 to 1 qt a day. It only has about 4500 miles on it since rebuild but so far so good. i guess alot depends on the place doing the rebuild.

Yeah I think that's all it is by how little comes out . but I keep hearing that when you just change that seal it'll pop right out.

It depends on the reason why the seal is leaking.

    There are 2 reasons.
1°bad seal.Replace and problem is solved.
2°seal gone bad because the inner mechanics off the steering box have worn. The shaft that passes thru the seal has to much play and that play will cause any seal to go bad very quickly.

A new input seal wont last if the input shaft has too much play. It is not hard to replace, but needs to be set to the correct depth and can easy be damaged installing.

I've had good luck with remans from Fleet Pride and Cumberland Truck Parts. Is it a TRW box? They're usually around $400.00, just ask about warranty.

Personally I think 2300 for a new one is too much, even if that includes labor. I got a new one for $850 after shopping around last year. A complete rebuild kit is usually $100 or so, and I have seen many re-mans for 400-600.

The quickest and easiest way is install a complete reman unit and move on. Most leaks do occur because either the shaft or housing has a groove worn in it and simply installing a new seal will only lead to another leak. Not too many shops dig into rebuilding gears. If you do, great. We don't. We replace the unit and get the customer back on the road with a proper warranty. None of this patching malarkey which only going to lead to another repair and more wasted down time and money. Definitely shop around, those prices seem way out of line.
