On the back rear on my truck I feel play in the yoke.
I don't feel up and down play I Feel play in the direction that the drive shaft turns like play in the steering wheel.
Is that type of problem definitely the yoke or could there be other problems beside that?

A little bit of rotational play is normal. Its the backlash between your ring and pinion gears. Without it your ring and pinion would probably melt together.
Dave_in_AZ and spyder7723 Thank this. -
Well on the front rear there is a very small amount of play but it's tight.
On the back rear you can really feel the difference that there's that much more play.
What I'm saying is that the front feels correct to me but the rear feels like the play is excessive -
Did you check it agaisnt a tool? What would you use? Dial indicator?
-
Well I'm sure that it's excessive.
The best way for me to say it is that if you were to look at the face of a clock, the front rear probably moves maybe a few minutes before 12 and a few minutes after 12.
The back rear probably moves closer between 10 and 2. It's excessive.
And I have a little dump truck that we don't really use anymore but that one is probably between 9 and 3. -

A full quarter turn (10:00 to 2:00)? Yeah there's a bit of slop there. I'm not sure I'd be stressed about it yet. Could be a combination of a bit of wear in everything. Pinion to ring gear, diff pins to planet pinions, planet pinions to axle side gears and axle side gear splines to axle shaft splines. Remember that any wear after the input pinion to ring gear will be amplified by whatever your rear axle ratio is.
I'd start with doing a plug swap and seeing whats on the magnet. If the magnet has chunks I'd probably pull the diff and investigate further.Samuelh, stillwurkin and Dino soar Thank this. -
I actually have another set of rears I could swap with them. I need to check them but from what I remember they were pretty tight they were pretty late model when I bought them.
The rears that are on this tractor need to be rebushed and the other ones don't so I had been thinking about swapping them anyway. I wasn't going to do it just over rebushing them but if problems may be in the future for these Rears I very well may swap them. I will begin with the plug Swap and go from there.
Could it just be the yoke itself?
