Any of you fellow hams have an opinion on using a stock, out of box RCI-2970N2 for 10 meters? I dont intend to do any cutting or modifiying, just run it stock. Its supposed to be rated for 200 watts PEP right out of the box, which should be plenty, without having to worry about heat issues or transistor failure. It seems to be a pretty decent radio. I would be using it with either a Wilson 500 or a Hustler center-load made especially for 10m use.

My very first HF contact was to Japan from Chicagoland when I became a ham and I used a RCI 2950DX
I have since used the 2970 as well, you will be very pleased.
The only mod I would add is a CTCSS Tone Board so you can work 10 meter repeaters that require a PL Tone. Not all repeaters require it though.
In fact, I believe the Ranger website gives directions on how to install the tone board

A little overkill maybe but you could add an LDG Auto Tuner and talk on 10 and 12 meter with the one antenna and not worry about the finals.

You can always use the tuner later if you add another radio.
12 meter has been very active lately, I talked to Lithuania on 12 meter the other day with only 100 watts. -

They work very good. And you should be happy with it. But I think that if you're only running it on 10 & 12 meters it's a little pricey. I would try to add a few more dollars and get a Yaesu FT-857D, or a Icom IC706MK2G. You would have a lot more radio for working the world.
WA4GCH Thanks this. -

I use the 2950DX for 10 but i have a 706 i use for the rest but i like it because that way i have no need to retune the other radio and can monitor more then 1 band at a time
