What do you do when the actual load weight is off by 5,000 pounds?

If everything else lines up and I’m not overweight I take it. It does tick me off sometimes though.

If you needed more for the load then you’ve got a good argument.

I always tell the broker and they’re usually like “....and?”

If booked as a full TL I always let them know "for future reference", maybe my way of being upset, & passive aggressive..

If I booked as partial LTL, I tell them the extra weight blew my other load, (even if it didn't, I still want more cash) & now I have to cancel one of the loads. They generally cough up another $100-$200 to keep their freight on your truck in an LTL situation..

And if the load is 5000#'s less than the rate con do you tell the broker you will need a new rate con for less money?

Of course not. I feel they are actually not trying to get one over on me for once though. Heavier than advertised freight falls under "typical broker games" to me, & deserves compensation. More equipment wear & tear, loss of fuel mileage, less availability of ltl to go with it, etc.

I'll let em know it's lighter than advertized after I get loaded, but a rate reduction.?, get lost. Not even a broker is dumb enough to ask for that.. Its their fault for not researching the freight they asked you to move. That's why they pay when they are wrong, either way..

So hauling more weight than posted is stealing from you but hauling less for the same rate is OK? Kind of one way logic.

I suppose one of the ways we can prevent this is by flagging any broker company or agent who does this. They tell you it’s 39k, but you end up loaded to 80k. o_O

Do you charge a lower rate if a load is 35k net vs 40k net in initial negotiation?

I should, but not at the moment. I use DAT loadboard for pricing and run some numbers to determine actual cpm. I’m still new to this.

How much lower is your cost on a lighter load that you are willing to haul for a lower rate on a 35k load vs a 40k load? Work those numbers out.
