Both my first GPS's were Garmins, which were OK. Chose them because of the free traffic updates, stayed with them because they were easy and straightforward to work with, but both developed odd electrical problems within their first year, finding reasons to reboot themselves over and over.
So am now thinking about RM. Heard they now also have free traffic updates, but also heard they fall off the magnet mount a lot.
Have they come up with a fix for the weak magnet mount? Or are we really living in a world where there's no such thing as as decent truck GPS?

I use the 540 no magnet mount on it. If size don't matter to you lol.

Can only speak for my experience, mine hangs in mid air off the dash lip on a T680, nothing anywhere to help hold the screen onto the magnet mount, and never had it fall off yet.
Even bouncing down 20 thru Shreveport last week didn't knock it off. Been there about 6 months now.stwik and slow.rider Thank this. -
I have their higher-end tablet products, which also use the magnet mount. The older 8-inch tablet, they sell a rubber casing for, which offers some protection if the tablet falls off of the magnet. I also use the power and audio connectors - if the device falls off of the magnet, the connected cables will catch it, or at least break it's fall.
In fairness, though, the only issue that I have had with the magnet, is when initially mounting the tablet to the windshield. During this procedure, I have the tablet attached to the magnet, so that I can position the suction cup on the windshield in an appropriate location. If the suction cup fails to stick well, the whole arrangement may fall to the dash, and this is where the tablet separates from the magnet, and then falls to the floor, and out of the open door onto the pavement, cracking the screen. Don't mount the tablet while the door is open - that helps. Put a drop of water on the suction cup - that helps it to stick to the windshield. And if possible, don't put the tablet on the magnet, until the base is securely mounted to, and positioned on, the windshield. This can require a good eye.
If you are OTR, you shouldn't have to mount and unmount the base very often. If the water sealing the base to the windshield freezes, you might have to remount to the windshield, but other than that, you should be okay. I slip-seat, so I have to go through this, every day. Sucks to be me...slow.rider Thanks this. -

Thanks for all the replies guys. I want to mount mine on the drivers door window, in which case the first stop would be the floor. No way to give support from underneath.

A "kludge" would be to add extra magnets added to the mount, if you want to pull the GPS from the mount. Although being that close to you, you may not need to remove it from mount. These "rare earth" magnets are cheap and available on eBay for maybe $1 each. You have your choice of square, rectangle, circular, and various thicknesses. They are STRONG. I bought 10 or 20 in a pack that are 1/4 inch by 3/4 inch and I can barely pull them off the fridge door unless I pull the paper they are holding on the door. These are not typical fridge magnets that barely hold a piece of paper on the door.
The mount is square, but similar to a hockey puck. You can gorilla glue a small L-bracket to the mount and gorilla glue or super glue a magnet on the back of the GPS. Or you could use L-brackets on the mount and Velcro on the back of the GPS.
Another method is mono-filament fishing line, with a short bungee cord on the back side of the mount. The fishing line would be over the screen and the 6 inch bungee would be pulling the fishing line tight from behind the mount.
Now that I think about it, you could probably use a drop or 2 of red Loctite between the mount and GPS. It's nearly permamnet for daya to day use, but a little force and the red Loctite breaks free. I guess it depends on how often to need the GPS to come off the mount. I take my GPS home when I go home. So I need it to be temporary on the mount.slow.rider Thanks this. -

Or if you have the 740 you can always call in to RM CS and ask for the upgraded Slice (Magnetic Mount)
As for Traffic it is free now. Since the TND-720 the traffic went to Internet based. The first year TND730's you had to pay for traffic, but now it is free. This has been about 3 years now.
Tablets - you have to create an account with the RM Market (Apps) and then download traffic.

Never had a problem with the suction mount that The 730 comes with. I’ve had this one just about 4 years. I gave up on RM’s power cords and just use a generic cable I bought at the Pilot. Otherwise no problem with the unit. I keep a short bungee attached to it, to catch it, should it ever fall off. Haven’t needed it yet.
