Recently my dad purchased mcnally tnd 720 and I have a question. Is there an option that lets you skip the roads that trucks are not allowed to go on??? I cant seem to find it. My dad said last time we went on the trip it took him thru roads that trucks weren't allowed to go on. Thanks in advance.

Sorry, I didn't mean to hijack your thread & I know I'm not providing any helpful info on the matter. But seriously Rand McNally, what's the deal with your $500 TRUCK GPS that doesn't know where trucks can & can't go?

Try under preferences switch to truck - should already have a truck route app installed - update your system - if all else fails read directions one more time and/or call support
- getting app error messages here -
its already set for truck in preferences, any recommendations for better gps? i used have pc miller until it broke

An update may detect and correct anything currupt - I am not able to get online thru lap top, pc etc right now - if you look, there's a tab called " tell rand about it" that I use if a route is incorrect, can't find address and some others.
In some cases I find a GPS can get confused do to restricted roads - example - rand routed me round 13 mles to a shipper when written directions stated the address was roughly 3/4 mile from my location. Out of curiosity I went with rands route, one mile of it came up restricted after I was on it with the shipper being on the corner.
Once I picked up my load I entered the address to where I started from, rand then gave the same 3/4 mile backwards that the written said to go. They aren't 100 percent correct but they'll put you in the area you need to be. -
have you gone into truck tools/, truck info/, and set the Weight, Height, width, trailer size....? the wrong setting and it will think you are driving a 14ft truck and will route on roads a 14ft'er can use
Preferences/, Route/ check the setting -
Maps are not 100% perfect. There are some roads/bridges/overpasses that are not in the map database as restricted. If you do find one, please report it.
If you set your preferences then it will route you on truck legal roads. But, as stated above, common sense takes charge. If you see a 12'6" bridge sign, then by all means go by the posted signs.
Updates are usually version updates and not map updates. The 720 has the latest set of maps available currently.
If you find a road/bridge/overpass that you are in doubt of, then let me know about it and I can have it checked out.
Please report these under the support thread please.
Thanks,

I have the TND-710, and there have been a lot of changes to roads regarding truck restrictions since the map was last updated. There seems to have been a flurry of activity by local authorities placing weight limits on roadways that were formerly allowing truck traffic.
Keep your head outside the truck while you're driving. Use the GPS for navigating the 'big roads', but use your eyes and your brain when you get close to your destination. If you're THAT concerned about it, change your routing options to exclude 'small roads'. You'll end up with routes that take you 10-40 miles longer than they should, but you'll be almost certain to be routed on truck legal roadways.
It's rare that the GPS will generate a route that includes a low clearance. I've only had that happen twice, both times in upstate New York. Most times the routes are extremely conservative where vertical clearance is concerned - some truck legal routes are excluded. Most annoyingly, the GWB (actually, it's the bridge just East of the GWB that comes up as restricted), and Goethals bridges into NYC. I would like to see this fixed post haste; there is absolutely no excuse for those oversights.
edit: The 710 also refuses to route over the Whitestone bridge.Treefork Thanks this. -
Part of I-95 in NYC is also restricted to 53'/102" trailers...
thanks,
