Will the core just slide out without having to remove the whole unit? If I remove the bolts on the tanks can it just be pulled out?

Nope. The bolts just hold the end cap to the core. Sorta like a valve cover on an engine. When you get a replacement, it'll look like this

DL550CAT Thanks this.

I’d definitely compare prices to a complete unit. Last time I did my KW there was not much difference between complete and just the core. There is a lot of bolts holding them tanks on.
GrapeApe Thanks this. -

Here's what you have to look forward to when R&R. -
When i did mine on an old FLD, it took 3 tries. I kept thinking that I screwed up the seal until I discovered that one of the solder joints on one of the cross tubes was defective. Of course you don't find out it's bad until you fill it. The way it was leaking, it looked like it was coming out of the bottom end of the tank.

In the long run, replace the whole unit. Doesn't cost much more and the unit is tested for leaks.
Mine was guaranteed not to leak.
I've read bad stories about leaky tank gaskets.
Good luck.
