good afternoon ladies and gents. I was wondering if anyone could give me the inside scoop on a company named R&M out of Omaha Nebraska? I would really appreciate the good the bad and the ugly and all feedback would be greatly appreciated.

All I know so far is that they are a part of a company named road runner along with sergeant and a couple more but I've read pay is pretty cool but I have not heard it from any drivers

OKAY...Please guys beware of this Company. First, R&M and Sortinos are essentially the same Company. Yes, they are both owned by Roadrunner, but I doubt that Roadrunner knows the sleezy tactics these guys utilize. I worked for an owner operator who was directly contracted to Sortinos/R&M. This is an 'asset based Company', which as we all know means they have no real assets--go figure. Though they do have trailers, and very nice ones. I will explain how they get these beauties. On the backs of owner operators--on the backs of you!!
Here are the events that transpired that encouraged me to run as far away from these clowns as possible:
First the good things/ In all fairness. They seemed like pleasant people, very nice trailers, and great--though very heavy miles!! if you are an owner operator then you may want some lighter freight..
When I was driving; a a big Company Wal### over--ordered. I sat at a dc seven hours while they picked through hundreds of boxes of chili peppers. The peppers were beautiful--no immaculate! Still no one wants to upset the worlds largest retailer, so I donated my time without complaining ( first mistake--they mistook my kindness for weakness---what a HUGE error...)
I was informed by my dispatcher that do not worry about it! He said it happened last week and will happen again. So naively I went along. These were not just a few boxes that were rejected but 8 pallets, what I was to find out was almost 7000 dollars worth of peppers Mucho! caliente!!!

What a difference a day makes : Now the next day they needed a scapegoat. Evidently there was a massive virus of cowardice that consumed Sortinos/ R&M staff. Or perhaps something much more sinister. Little did the dispatcher know that in the seven years of my reefer trucking exp I had never had a problem with the temp of a single load. Little did they know that I had once owned a large produce company and am an expert at temperature controlled product. No, to them I was just a new driver, so what an easy target. Plus the owner of the truck had only two trucks with Sortinos--so to them he was essentially a 'nobody'.

I was told to admit my mistake! What mistake I asked? Well somehow the product temperature was 1 degree off of the worlds largest retailer had requested. Now remember we are talking about chilli peppers, ones that were imported from Mexico--likely thousands of miles without refrigeration. Also do not forget that the trailer set there against the closed dock door for 3 hours before Wal### dc employees took the temp of the leaking temp trailer. But somehow with years of experience and a near complete understanding of imported produce I made an error. Of course this was ridiculous. They told me just admit your error. I did just what I was told set the temperature just as I told and never let the temperature fluctuate beyond the range informed to do so. I asked to take the trailer somewhere and get a reefer reading to prove my innocence, but they refused. They told me do not worry about it, it would not come out of my pocket. The message was clear; buddy up with them and they would spoil me, meanwhile my owner op was going to get the shaft. Why did they do all this??

    It Gets Interesting

Now what to do with seven thousands dollars of peppers?? Well this is where the real scam comes in. Between the tears of the owner op on the phone and testimony that he was going to go bankrupt, Sortino/ R&M management suddenly got real interested in these peppers or should I say the money that was going to be made by them on the salvage deal. I got calls from everybody, people I never heard of deep within the Sortino organization. You got it, they could smell a buck, and I could smell a rat!
Everything from here on in was canned on their part, their emotions, their responses and most of all their suspiciously impeccable timing. Even though it was the owners choice of what to do with the load, everyone wanted me--no, nearly demanded me to bring it to this particular produce house in Omaha.. All the way to Omaha! Here I was given exact directions by at least four different people--none of who I had ever met or heard from before. They were suddenly so concerned about these peppers. Oh one thing I did not mention was that the load had two stops. The next Wal### which ordered more responsibly gladly took all their product--peppers included, all happy and content. So after being bombarded by directions--I never asked for any, and told them I had GPS, I was to meet some shaky character, after hours at some warehouse and deliver the product.
The owner of the truck was to never see any of this money! So here is there angle. They get kickback from the sale of the produce. It is essentially insurance fraud, but so that they do not defraud the insurance company directly, they utilize the owner-ops insurance. It is all part of the scam, and this then subsidizes their new trailers!

I hope I am wrong. But I am a retired cop and I can usually smell not only a rat, but a thief. Hopefully it was weakness on the part of the dispatcher, cowardice for not protecting their owner ops against overzealous clerks who fresh out of college do not an anaheim pepper from a serrano!! Nor pound weights or box counts etc..

Overall stay away from these people. At worst they are crooks at the best they are weak and spineless and will turn on you in a minute. There are GOOD Companies out there. This just is not one of them..

PS: Expect one of their cronies to come on here and pose as a driver and tell you how all is peaches with this Company....

I also want more info on this company. This is an old thread though. And I see a few issues with this "drivers" compliant. First he said he owned a large produce company. Then he said he was a cop too. Then, the most suspicious part is he joined the same month he posted his complaint and that had been his only activity. Hmmmm, makes you wonder..... I'm taking that complaint with a grain of salt.

Any current drivers have info on R&M??

I looked into them before but couldn't find anything on them, I think it's all lease/O/O so be careful... If your wanting to go down that road look into road runner, no dispatcher you run yourself. There's a few threads on here about them, and if you get a good truck that don't break down, you can make some cash

    KoolKid Thanks this.

No, I've looked into them, but the company I'm with right now treats me very well and also has a lease program which I will be doing soon or waiting until spring. The one thing that I really liked about RR is NO DISPATCHER! That's music to my ears, and also SNI has the choice program which pays a little less but still are plenty of happy drivers. I wish more company's offered that sort of deal.
