What're some common and good questions to ask a broker when I respond to his/her post on a load board. I know some questions will face some resistance, but what is your checklist of questions to always get answers to before you agree to a load?

    Thanks in advance!

I assume you see the rate on the board. If not, of course, ask. I ask the weight - often what is posted is not accurate, just a default number. I want to know pickup and delivery dates and times - and whether there is any flexibility to either or both. (Whether I can make the appointments or not is immaterial - I always check whether flexibility exists.) If the broker works with the shipper only and not the receiver, i.e., if he only has shipper info but little or nothing for the receiver I ask him to get it - or as much as possible. (I don't want to be surprised with some out-there delivery appointment or weird circumstances.) If he can't or won't get additional info I pass on the load. I ask about lumpers - if it is that kind of load. I ask about acessorial pay - if any - but never base much on it. The load has to pay good enough to cover accessorial.

I mostly deal with Dryvan freight and these are the things I ask:

    1.Rate
    2.pick up date & time,
    3.Delivery date & time,
    4.weight,
    5.commodity,
6.is there going to be a lumper and if so who pays it,
7.If the load picks up in a port and the driver does not have a TWIC card ask the amount for the escort and who covers it,
8.after what amount of time does detention start and at what rate,
9.also verify the pick and delivery city because some brokers will post a load out of a major city when it in fact picks up in a suburb sometimes 40-50 miles away,
10.if the load requires to scale light & heavy and do they cover this cost,
11.Is it driver assist or tailgate,
    12. are there any extra stops,

Be sure that all the answers to the above listed questions are either on the rate con or in writeing via e-mail so you have something to go back to if needed

    Hopefully this will help you.
