Questions about Schneider's training and pay

From the pay structure it sounds like he is slated for a dedicated account. As you said, mileage is straight forward, paid on practical dispatched miles. The hourly pay is for every minute logged on line 4 - pre trips, post trips, feelings, loading, etc. The shipment pay is for each load. My guess is he will average 5.5 day work weeks, sitting at $1,250 to $1,500 a week starting out.

Orientation is 3 weeks. Week one is a lot of hard skills and an introduction to soft skills, week 2 is a big focus on soft skills and sharping hard skills, week 3 is applying those skills on the road with a TE.

Schneider has the best new driver training program in the industry. It's a solid place to get started and some of us have found a (mostly) happy home.

This really answered a lot of questions, so thank you. It's a Dollar General account, yep. Really excited for the kid! Do you happen to know how home time works logistically? He's been told his run is a Tuesday - Saturday run and he's going anywhere from North Carolina into Maryland. We're in the northwest corner of Virginia, about 20 mins from either MD or WV, so we're assuming he'd be close-ish by at the end of his run and would drive home and park at a nearby truckstop and have his two days off? Apologies for the ignorance. Like I explained upthread, my husband has always done LTL and we never had to figure out hometime.

I did Tanker with Schneider, downsize is their training centers for tanker are Coraopolis PA(Pittsburgh) or Houston TX.
I agree with @lual Charlotte used to be a good terminal.
If OTR, Schneider Tankers got 6 days off per month(Day of arrival and depart used to not count)
Only once was I called and asked to come back out on a run, but the truck broke down 25 miles from my house and Of course their infinite wisdom with tankers is, You have to park a tank truck/bobtail or not, at your terminal or tank wash nearby, which is 100 miles from home, but I went in and did it, didn’t have too, but only had another day off anyways.

Overall not bad, i went there with driving experience but my tank experience was none on unloading, as I’d pulled them, but just drop/hook.
Tanker division wasn’t bad, Ud recommend because you can get a great job afterwards vs door slammer.

Boasso Global has a terminal in Charleston SC (yeah i know 200 mile away give or take) but they used to be a decent company, but required tank experience or you could get to haul fuel and be home every night later on if that would be of interest.

Me personally, I prefer regional, i don’t go further than 500 miles from home anymore, but i’ve been to all states even with a tanker.
Slow and easy, don’t hit curbs (in turns and curbs no baffles will get product to not only forward to back but side to side, and takes a bit to settle down.

Well, that's something to think about! He's currently in for a dedicated Dollar General run but he talks about going out and seeing the lower 48 if it's possible. He'll be 23 in the fall, no significant other, no kids, all the time in the world to go explore what he wants to do. I wonder if tanker would take him out further.

Oh Lord. I can't recommend DG for a newbie. Actually, I can't recommend it at all.
It's a tough, tough job and I've rarely seen a DG store that had a dock or a reasonable place to turn around.
Ya'll might want to drive around to a few stores with your husband and ask him what he thinks.

DG accounts means you get to unload the trailer, a lot by hand, small stores, no docks cars blocking you in/out . strip malls in middle nowhere, backing i off street because you can’t turn around in the premises(cars no room) I’m not trying to hurt feels, but i wouldn’t do it..

noone wants the account.

20 minutes from WV and MD puts you in the northeast corner not northwest.

we need to shift our search area east

Agree here with the above -- any "dollar" store account or job is much better left for drivers with A LOT more experience.

BUT -- that's no reason to bail on Schneider completely. Remember -- a large carrier like Schneider should indeed be able to offer him something else.

The link below shows some proof of this; this job is the same one I ran first for Schneider:

OTR driver -- eastern 37 states -- dry van freight -- mostly drop-n-hook

That one will be a mix of different customers -- not dedicated dollar-store work.

Oh noooo. I'll show him. I asked the husband and he said he hadn't realized that's the run the kid is signed up for. Wondering if it's worth it to stick it out for a bit and try to get on something different, or should he right from the start request something else?

I assure you that Frederick County, Virginia is in the northwest corner of the state. We're in the southern part of the county so it's maybe more like 30 - 40 mins with traffic.
