Longggggg time lurker, first time poster. My husband is the CDL holder in the household (LTL) for the past 20+ years (always done LTL), or he was until last week when our 22 year old got his CDL. He reached out to the recruiters who showed up to his class and was turned down by every single one for not having 6 months experience (why try to recruit out of a class, then?) except for Schneider. He's headed out this weekend to begin training in Charlotte. We want to be supportive but OTR is a whole different beast from LTL, so I'm hoping some of you guys will have some advice.
His recruiter quotes him $.34 cpm, on duty $15/hr, and "shipment" of $100. Can someone decode this? His recruiter is super vague on answers. CPM is pretty self explanatory and we're guessing that the "shipment" pay is a per load payment, but that's as far as we got. Husband reached out to some OTR drivers he knows and they all said he's getting ripped off but didn't go into details. Kid knew from the beginning that he'd have to put in the time to get experience and likely wouldn't be making much, so is this typical pay?
Any idea on what to expect at the training facility? Anyone with some suggestions on things to bring that the recruiter won't tell you? And, lastly, does Schneider provide the transportation down? His recruiter is supposed to checking on that but we're 5.5 hours away from Charlotte and need to figure something out if he needs to get down there on his own.
Thanks in advance!

Forget Schneider. Plenty of other companies will hire your son for OTR if that's what he wants.

Will he run teams or strictly want solo position?

Cancel the Schneider orientation, then put in some more applications. Schneider will still be there if nothing else works out.Last edited: Aug 2, 2023

I've passed on the information and he's applying this afternoon with Magnum, and the others that he already spoke to. Apparently he was dissuaded from even applying online after they told him they had no room for fresh CDL holders. He planned to put 6 months in with Schneider and then look around again.Chinatown Thanks this.
