Hello all.
I am a bit lost in an issue i am facing. Colorado has shut down all DMV's and im having troubles renewing online.
When i go to renew online, i get this message:
"Hazardous Materials endorsement holders are not eligible to renew online. Pursuant to 49 CFR 383.71 (d)(3), persons wishing to retain a hazardous materials endorsement must pass the written test when applying for CDL renewal. Due to the written test requirement, hazmat endorsements must be renewed in a driver license office. If you wish to drop your hazmat endorsement, please apply for a downgraded license."
I do have a current Hazmat endorsement. Im not really sure what to do. My license expires on the 19th of April but i think all DMV's and Licensing are closed until end of April beginning of May. I tried calling but no agents are currently working. Theres really no information for CDL holders on the website. I've never really been faced with this predicament before.
Is there anything else i can do? Thanks for your time!

If you find that you are out because your professional license is bad due to no one being open due to Coronavirus, then you let the Unemployment people know that you are a casulty of the process due to the virus and they will pay you unemployment plus additional funding that is being put together for those out of work in some way due to the virus effects on society or you personally.
closures are also happening in our area as well. Our county court criminal and civil just slammed shut and turned off lights until at least April. So anyone arrested will sit in the lockup until at least April and those with civil suits will just have to darn well wait until after April 15.
Its like a paralysis or a freeze on our way of life good and bad.Rybak Thanks this. -
Looks like they'll be open before you expire.
Clear Creek County motor vehicle is closed through April 1
Delta County motor Vehicle is closed March 19- March 27
El Paso County has closed motor vehicle offices at least through March 27 -
I'm from Texas so this is just what applies here.
Our Governor, yesterday, suspended all renewals for driver's licenses, vehicle safety inspections and vehicle registration for 60 days. After that, it will be determined if further delays are necessary.
There is a notice on our DPS website confirming this.
It could be that CO has also gone that way. You should be able to find something on the state website.Rybak Thanks this. -
Thanks for all the help guys. Guess ill be making a trip down to El Paso county.

That is a good question... are you actively using the Hazmat endorsement now? If not then you should be able to renew just your cdl and let the hazmat drop for now, and go in when they are back open and renew your hazmat then. I mean, when you renew the hazmat you have to retake the test and the background check, etc. anyway, so it shouldn’t make a difference if you let it expire for awhile. But again, that only works if you aren’t regularly hauling hazmat.
This sounds like something the gooberment didn’t think through very well lol (surprise).Rybak Thanks this. -
Thanks!Kyle G. Thanks this. -
I think I misunderstood your original post. So you are saying it won’t even let you renew your cdl online because you have a hazmat endorsement. Does your hazmat expire at the same time as your cdl? This just doesn’t make sense to me because in my experience, my hazmat endorsement has always been renewed separately from my cdl. In fact, on my license, under “restrictions,” it says my HM endorsement is valid until xxx date, whereas my cdl does not expire till a later date. Maybe they do things differently in Colorado.
I don’t want to give you wrong information... hopefully someone smarter than me will see this and chime in. -
