Hi there! I have been looking for the last month on training to get my CDL and most companies that do offer training aren't in the Albany NY area. The only place I have found is a school called CDL School in Menands NY. I did check out the BBB and seen there were 9 complaints with them. Any thoughts on this school or does anyone know of any companies that offer training in my area? Thank you in advance! :biggrin_25519:

You could look at the school I am attending, TDDS here in Ohio. They do take people from out of state but since you are not from OH, PA or WV you would have to get an Ohio license while you are here. It is on the expensive side but well worth it.

Or you could look into a community college that offers a class, people seem to also like that route.

I'm about an hour south of Albany and after a lot of looking around, I am going to Wisconsin for my school, it will be cheaper and faster than anything I found in NY. Plus from what I can see on comments and such I believe it is a better school.

I happen to be looking in the Albany area as well. I have been for a very long time~ ended one career, going into a second. But like TatooedAngel, reviews in this area aren't so great. I didn't really want to travel out of the state, but unfortunately I may need to move ahead.

A 30 second search revealed the following schools in NY. Rather than go out of state, wouldn't one of these fit the bill since they are in your home state?

    New York

AAAA Driving School of Staten Island, Brooklyn
AAAA Driving School of Staten Island, Staten Island
    Advanced Truck Driving School, Levittown
Al Sorano's Professional Driving School, Bronx
    All Star Driving School, Albany
Bishops Tractor Trailer Training, Ballston Spa
    CDI School, Menands
    CDL School, Montgomery
    CDL School, Bronx
    Central Square Driving Academy, Hastings
    Champlain Valley Educational Services, Plattsburg
Colwell's Professional Truck Driving School, Bronx
    Commercial Driver Training, Kingston
    Commercial Driver Training, West Babylon
East Coast Truck Driving School, Patchogue
    L&M Commercial Driving School, Newburgh
    L&M Commercial Driving School, Washingtonville
Mohawk Valley CC Tractor Trailer Driving School, Rome
Mr. Do Truck Driving School, Mayville
    National Tractor Trailer Training, Buffalo
    National Tractor Trailer School, Liverpool
    SAGE Technical Services, Vestal
    Semi Trailer Training School, Chester
    Sunny Truck Driving School, Flushing

You may not find a school within a 5 minute drive, but I would think staying in state is preferable.

    How about this one?

    NEW YORK: SAGE Technical Services
    Truck Driving School
    3129 Old Vestal Rd.
    Vestal, NY 13850
1-877-709-7243 (Binghamton, Elmira and Ithaca area; also serving northern PA)
SAGE at Mohawk Valley Community College
    1101 Floyd Ave.
    Academic Bldg., Room 201
    Rome, NY 13440-4699
1-866-878-2568 or 315-334-7793 (Utica/Rome, Syracuse, Watertown and Albany areas)

No offense, but I think you are being a bit lazy here. I don't know the area but in 5 minutes, I seem to have found a number of alternatives. I cannot vouch for any of them, of course, but certainly it is a place to start.

Actually I take offense to you calling me lazy.. when you typed it yourself you don't know my area and in those 5 mins all those alternatives you found the only 2 even somewhat close to my area is All Star Driving which is no longer open and CDL in Menads which I did ask about in my first post. All the other ones you found are well over a 4 hr drive from me. So calling me lazy for finding the same schools you found before I posted is a bit far fetched isn't it? Seems to me two other posters from my area are having the same problem finding a school here so it's more of lack of schools not lack of research. Have a terrific day and forget I posted the above question.

I wouldn't worry much. If some one thinks that know what they are talking about will post useless information and say it's useful. Sorry for your hard times searching for a school. I have one at every turn here in Florida. If I were you, I would suggest looking through community colleges for tech programs that have CDL courses. And if you can't find them, I don't know what else to say then go out of state. However, here in florida if you are not a Resident you will be paying 8-10k for our community college CDL courses, while I only pay 2.3k since I am a resident. I assume it is like this everywhere though.

I realize this thread is a few months old, but I'm from the Albany, NY area as well. I had an issue with finding a school around this area as well. I believe there are 3 locations in this area. Allstar, CDL school, and one in Schenectady, i forgot the name. They all seemed questionable as far as I'm concerned. the CDL school is the only one with class, the other 2 are just in truck. The Cdl school just seems to be all about getting a cdl and no extra learning involved. There's a lot more to learning truck driving than just getting a cdl. I choose to go out to Rome, NY at Sage, very good program. Good teachers with actual experience trucking. There's another Sage in Vestal but i hear Rome is where you want to go. I also hear NTTS out in Buffalo is good, but that's even further from Albany.. Rome is only a couple of hours..
