You will not have to take the written tests for airbrakes or general knowledge, only need to take the one four your P endorsement. But, they want to take the pre-trip and road test so they can see that you understand how to pre-trip seats, lights, understand emergency evaculation procedure, and maybe a few other things.
I have a class A and I just added my P and S endorsements. Had to retest for a class B in a school bus (had to be yellow, or it didn't count for an S endorsement).
Tanker, HazMat, and doubles/triples do not require a new pre-trip or road test. Those are all just written tests, with a HazMat also requiring a TSA background check.Last edited: Aug 16, 2010
Lilbit Thanks this. -
Well if you did it then it must be true but strange !!!! -
To add a 'P' Passenger endorsement or 'S' School bus endorsement, additional pre-trip and road testing is required because you are making yourself responsible for passengers and school children.
The original post was about adding the 'P' Passenger endorsement. -
The class A or B does not really matter. They need you to physically show that you know the few things different on a passenger vehicle. It's more about the pre-trip than the driving portion.
However, the one way my class of license mattered is with the whole MVA things about testing in the kind of vehicle that you want to be licensed for. I took it in a school bus and not a class A vehicle. So, I have a restriction on my license that says I am not licensed to drive a class A bus.
I don't know the answer to this, but I wonder if adding an air brake endorsement (actually, removing the restriction) would require a new driving test, since you have to show your air brake tests on the pre-trip. I know we have several people at my work with class B licenses, but no air brake endorsement. I would think that if it were as easy as a written test, they would have tested for it by now. Not a concern for me, but it has me curious enough that I want to know the answer. -
Here in Cali you have to do the driver test with CHP in the vehicle of choice, such as church bus, school bus, after you take the written test before you get the endorsement. I have a passenger endorsement, but that was only a 1 trip career with the big grey dog. I don't ever even show it. People by far are the worst load. WHen you put the load locks in they keep releasing them, very hard to secure.
