If I bought a truck from another state and bobtail it home, do I have to:

    Run a log book?

    Only drive 11 hours?

    Go "off-duty" for 10?

If so, I think it's sad that a 4-wheeler can drive non-stop across the country legally, but we're stuck using the same rules as if we were runnin' 80,000+lbs down the road w/ a trailer!!!!!!!

    Bob-tail?

Sounds like "personal conveyance" to me!

Just be sure you have the temporary registration, insurance, and proof of purchase with you. Log would be Line 1, Off Duty.

I can drive while in "line 1- off duty?"

Is it because the truck isn't considered a commercial vehicle while bobtailing with the temporary reg. and ins.??????

That's a good question. I would say yes because the purchase and transport is used to support your business.

You are allowed to run to Walmart, or move personal belongings without logging. But what you are doing is relocating a CMV for the sole purpose to make money.

You might ask dieselbear or scalemaster that question.

log is as "off duty driving" and drive it like it's a POV because right now it is, but you still need to stop at the open scales

You also need to pull into any scales and could face a DOT inspection.
I have asked this question many many times and I get just as many answers.

Dieselbear is the Ultimate to ask.

If your within 100 miles of your home base, you could run a time sheet vs a log but over 100miles, just log this trip
and have the prior 7 days of course with you, even if you were off-duty.

I took this rig from central MN to southern WI and only passed 1 scale which wasn't even open, but I was not hassled.
I also put "NOT FOR HIRE" signs on the doors as I drove it home.
No registration required. I just had a copy of the signed title and yea, I did have full insurance coverage on it.

Some laws vary per state too....

I would get an answer straight from the horses mouth. Drop one of them guys a PM.

I do know for a fact, even though it's a company thing, we had drivers go through orientation. Then they would be sent in a rental car to another state to get their trucks. They were required to log on duty while in the rental car.

Because it is "personal conveyance"...you're not hauling freight, you are not "working", but bringing a new purchase back to get the complete registration and documentation ready for the use as a CMV. But right now for this trip...it almost classifies as an RV...without shower privileges!:biggrin_25523:

I would have to agree with CondoCruizer.
Although the following FMCSA guidance is not exactly on point, I think that it is close enough. You would be taking an unnecessary risk by calling that trip off-duty.
    §390.5 Definitions.

Question 6: Is transporting an empty CMV across State lines for purposes of repair and maintenance considered interstate commerce?
    Guidance:

Yes. The FMCSRs are applicable to drivers and CMVs in interstate commerce which transport property. The property in this situation is the empty CMV.

Oh and when you bobtail like this...on the Manifest/Shipper section of your log page,
    always put EMPTY.

I learned that....didnt get me a ticket cause I was nice to the lady but had left it blank cause I wasn't hauling anything...
