what can I expect to happen by putting a high flow low restriction muffler on a mechanical diesel?

on a car or snowmobile engine, if you add headers or performance exhaust, it will run leaner due to getting more air into the combustion chamber and you have to increase the carburetor jetting to keep EGTs down and transform the extra air into power.

What about on a highway truck?

    Very true with a snowmobile.
Change the pipe to high flow you need to add fuel or it will go lean and melt a piston.
A diesel though is much different.
The only way to increase air flow is a bigger turbo.
Change to a less restricted exhaust on your mechanical diesel will most likely lower your exhaust temperature slightly and give a slightly better fuel mileage.
There is zero chance you will cause engine damage on a diesel by just changing to a high flow exhaust.

People do it all the time.

I put a hi flow on the 05 w900 I was driving. Little better on fuel. It was practically hollow.

When I had the computer erased and reloaded with nothing governed or passwords. That made a BIG improvement in power and economy.

And coolant temps too? Lower EGTs is a good thing.

I never noticed much difference in coolant temps at all.
I run a straight pipe on my 14 liter Detroit.

Through your old flashlight batteries down the stack for awhile and you will figure it out without spending money. It has been a long time but some guys went back to short mufflers after straights. Said they ran better with a little restriction. Lots of different engines and combinations out there. They would not all be the same.
See lots of big pipes anymore. Wonder how they would test on a dyno in comparison.
