pulping has seemed to be a lapse in todays carrier. I have talked with many that will sleep while they are loading berries or greens and then they are wondering why they are getting kicked for those 2-3 degree variance's trust me guys get your loads pulped. it's nott hose big supermarket chains that are getting you it's the small guys I.E demoulas here in mass they are right on it i,ve bought more spoiled loads from them than i can know. The mkt guys love it but you could have done the prevention before you ran 3,000 plus miles to go run at least 175-200 more to get rid of the rejects. it's a 29.00 thermometer guys lets pulp.

    mje Thanks this.

if you had a load of those old time strawberries you had better pulp them, and get your reefer calibrated at themo king while you are at it.

Pulping is taking the internal temp of product to verify its at the correct temp to load on the trailer. You stick a probe thermometer into the "pulp" of the fruit.

Calibrating The Reefer Is Mega Important I,ve Seen Reefers Have A 7 Degree Variance On Start Stop It's Definately Enough Of a Variance To Blow A load Of Lettuce Or Other Fragile Commodity It shouldn't Have Anymore Than Like 3 Degree Variance When On Start Stop.

I never had the pleasure too haul strawberries yet.
but since most of them are gassed with the c02. what is the correct way to pulp them without damaging the gas seal?
also do you produce haulers break your door seal in mid trip to pulp a load and replace the seal with your own or just go by your reefer units thermometer

    mje Thanks this.

Never seal produce load--had couple places try--but just rip it off--as for gassed strawberries--typically they take em outta the cooler and bag and gas as loadin--so ck em be4--But more important w/any produce--smell&taste! Problem I've seen in recent years like OP said is people not even botherin to go up on dock&check!
oh and not ALL strawberries are gassed---try overnites outta Fl in Feb to NY or Chicago w/fresh strawberries Now that's a blast LOL

mje and sir duke Thank this.

sir duke: pulp them and put tape over the hole you make.

everybody oughta pulp their stuff -- and EVERY PALLET. Half the time I find good temps but ONE pallet with bad temps. ie pears that are 33, and then one pallet that's 44. Some shippers give you flak for pulping. One even #####ed at me that he KNEW I didn't swab my probe with alcohol beforehand. I told him I carry peroxide AND isopropyl alcohol in my truck! Jerk!

sir duke and mje Thank this.
