I have a road test tomorrow, but at the academy and with my mentor I only had an eaton fuller 10 speed.

The test is in an 8 speed.

Im used to the 10 speed so much. I know the patterns and which gear to be in depending on my MPH.

With the 8 speed not so much.

Like if its a sudden red light and im slowing down, then it turns green again, and now im at 23 MPH, which gear would I need to be in? stuff like that

I could not tell you what gear to be in. But if I had to make a wild guess you will be right about either 4th low or 5th high. If that thing lugs on you downshift one. If it happens to be too much rpm, ease in clutch and take the next one up.

MPH is one thing. Your engine is the most important during shifting. The tach and behavior of the truck will be more important than MPH.

Don't sweat it. Two fewer gears will actually be a benefit to you, they will be more room between shifting, if that makes sense to you.

The high side is similar the low side will tend to have more spread between gears, also the gate is wider so the actual.gears are a bit further apart spatially.

Don't remember driving an Eaton 8speed, we had Rockwell Meritor, and the Eatons have been 10, 13, or 18 speeds since that company early on that had 8 plus Grannie, but in Rockwell instead of Eaton.

High side of 5th gear. Where 7 would normally be in a 10 speed.

Not much difference between an 8 or 10. Google the 2 and see the shift patterns. 10 you button hook back to 1 position with a range into high. 8 you don't. At one time there was a 8 sp direct with no range selector.

Also the granny gear has a high range. It's kind of like 4.5 gear. You go from 4th gear, range select up and go into lo high. Like 6th in a 10.

    Don't You split from 4th to go 5th on a 8 speed? And 5 split to 6th on a 10?

10 speed yes, you split and then come across the box into the spring for that 6th from 5th low. Most newbies get thrown off because to them it's so far across the box and then they have to put it into where their right front jeans pocket would be.
