Hey guys tomorrow I have to take a 33,000 lbs. straight truck load from Toledo, OH to Midland, MI and back. I only drive occasionally and I want to make sure that I log it correct. Do I need to make out a log book with the last seven days of activity in it? I know I need to log the trip for tomorrow. I worked in the shop and punched a time clock for the past four days so do I have to make that into a logbook before I can be legal?

You need the last seven days.
If you had shop time, that would be ,on duty not driving. -
Yes, you will need the previous 7 days plus the day you are on. Officially, any non driving work done for pay must be logged on duty not driving. Unofficially, I would just do a 7 day off duty log.

It's up to you if you want to log in your shop time. To be official you should. But remeber you can't drive after 70 hrs. On duty time.
Also remember you can only do a 70 restart once every 7 days and must have 2 period from 1-5 off to get it. And it must be 34 hrs. Off time. -
A restart is 168 hrs from the beginning of the last 34 hr restart which means it's NOT every 7 days to the next 34 hr

People fudge they're logs all the time to a least make it look leagule. Try to stay within your legal limits. Always make it look legal.
Look I don't want to miss guid you especially if you looking for proper loging tips just try to stay within your legal limits.
Ask some the drivers were you work at. What are the laws you will haft to log by.
These are some of the laws you should look into.
30 min break,
11 hours drive 14 hour work day,
70 hrs. On duty a week.
Only one 34 hr restart every seven days must have two 1-5am. time periods.
That's just a snap shot crash course at what you should be looking into.
Start off with 15min pre trip and depending on wich state it is you might haft to fill out a d.v.I.r. at the end of the day.Last edited: Jan 17, 2014

For my office time I fill out a Driver's Time Record. It looks like a log book but it's used for drivers who only need a time sheet. Then when I drive I use an actual log book. Between the two I'm covered for every day I work.
