I was recently quoted and purchased a policy from progressive. I received my insurance card and certificate of insurance and I paid in full. However 48 hours later my authority was still not active. They told me that they would not file the BMC-91 form unless I increased my operating radius to 500 miles or greater (drastically increasing rate) because I am a new DOT number. They would not verify this in writing and only would state that it is company policy. They admit that this "company policy" is not disclosed on any documents available to public. Has anyone heard of this?? They say it applies to all states. I refused to increase and they refused to file. I canceled. ALL THIS AFTER MULTIPLE CALLS for 2 weeks TO VERIFY EVERYTHING WAS GOOD!
PROGRESSIVE OPERATING RADIUS??

I think the first year I had Progressive they did have me on a 500 mile radius.
I did not have a new dot number but I think it was just their policy for whatever reason I seem to remember asking them for a smaller radius and they said no.
The second-year they offered me a smaller radius. Go figure.Jarhed1964 Thanks this. -
They should have never written the policy if they had no plans to file the form so you can activate. That's pretty cruddy of them. I've always had unlimited myself. The different mileage bands never made much of an impact on my rates so wasn't worth limiting myself.

Are you going to operate in a smaller Radius? Being new the have no way to know that without having IFTA filings to look at.
You are kind of at thier mercy if you can't find anyone else to insure you.Jarhed1964 Thanks this. -
Yes, progressive requires first year to be 500 radius miles.
Should inquire if that’s air miles, or miles. Air miles would give a far radius.Jarhed1964 Thanks this. -
if its 500 miles it won't be air miles per the wife(who works in commercial insurance). Progressive just pulled this crap on me. I was quoted an amount with no minimum radius...... got my declarations page and it said 500 miles. I told the agent and progressive themselves and the online application no minimum mileage. I was told 2x no mileage requirements. I had to pay another $1400 to make it maximum miles today.

As an O/O that has had Progressive for 2 years now, yes, all new entrant’s must have 500 or greater miles radius. Do not let anyone or agent tell you otherwise.
Also, keep in mind that Progressive holds mileage radius from where the truck is parked. It does not consider mileage radius based upon load locations. What this means, if you pick up a load beyond 500 miles from your base/garaging address and your policy is limited to a 500 mile radius, you have an accident outside your policy mileage radius, Progressive can deny payment/coverage. I just renewed my policy and was told I could lower my mileage radius and save money. I called Progressive and they told me this information.Jarhed1964 and nikmirbre Thank this. -

They definitely have something going on with the radius.
The first year my radius was 500 miles. I couldn't tell you if they offer unlimited I don't remember but I don't travel that far.
The second year the rate went up a little. When I said hey the rate went up they said we'll drop your radius down to 250 and then the rate will be about the same.
I remember the first year I asked them to drop the radius and they refused.
So like I said they definitely have something going on with the radius especially your first year.
Oh and they did tell me that if I travel outside of that radius that's okay if I call them and tell them. It's just not something that I can do everyday regularly.Jarhed1964 and nikmirbre Thank this. -
The first year quote progressive sent me was within 500 miles radius. The quote was $16k.
I told them there is no way I will be staying within 500 mile radius I will go anywhere but Cali.
They sent another quote and it was $23k… actually a bit more with GL attached. I was like #### lolol should have kept quiet. I paid cash so it was approx $19k in cash for the year.
My second year quote was $203 less.
I went with Great West this time, after looking everything over it was almost 4K less than progressive with GL and tow coverage.
I think when a lot of people sign on with progressive and sign a 500 mile policy, then drive further than 500 miles the first year, when they go to renew and IFTA shows they went beyond 500 miles they always get the $2-3k increase and are surprised.Last edited: Aug 22, 2021
