I was checking into what all is involved in being an owner/operator when I stumbled upon a web site called “Rigbooks.” It was very informative. The only part I didn’t understand was under the owner/operator costs and expenses section the author said you only make 5% profit on your gross and the other 95% was expenses. What sense does that make ?

Eight percent is the low end, eleven to twelve is the norm. Fifteen is on the high side.

Five percent is low, very low,

Assume you are paying yourself a company driver salary, then extra percentage would be profit from the business. But yeah, 5% is low, it should be more than 15 if you have own authority

Yeah, that's silly. I am able easily to end a year with 50k more in savings than when I started. I certainly don't haul a million bucks worth of freight a year.

Also worth considering is that a lot of the "expenses" of an owner op would be just regular money spending in normal people life.

5% would be more if you were hiring a driver like a fleet company.
