So I had to shake my head at this one. My company allows us to have a power inverter but it must be installed by a shop. Well I tried company shops twice with no luck and got authorization to have the freightliner dealer install it.
To my dismay I found out I know more about electronics than the professionals installing my inverter. Lets see what you guys think....
The inverter is a 2k watt with surge capacity up to 4k watt. I'll give you the proper gauge wire to use, it's 2 gauge. Now the "professionals" insist that the main power wire gets a 150A fuse. What do you think? I'll give you a hint P = I x E .
Quick FYI I went to school for electronics and have done high end car stereo system installs, in the end their tech admitted I knew more about it than him and should have just been allowed to do the install myself.

If it was me, I'd put a 10 amp in it so every time you sneezed it would blow...

It sounds like you know more about it that I do. Don't most inverters have a fuse built in though ? I could see maybe a fusible link or something if you're running long cables to the inverter.
I'm probably the reason companies insist on shop install but I always just mount the inverter in the battery box with short power cables and run an extension cord through a grommet into cab. Is this wrong ? -

should have asked him to put that in writing.

The " SHOP" installation request has a lot to do with the INSURANCE COMPANIES,

Its a really bad idea to mount an inverter inside the battery box. As your battery charges it releases sulfuric gas which is flammable. A spark inside the inverter could ingnite the gas. Granted it's a small risk but if your power regulator goes bad your alternator could start overcharging the batteries boiling out the acid causing higher than normal concentrations of gas in the battery box.
Inverters do have internal fuses but without a fuse between the battery and the inverter the input wire could short causing a fire.M818 and dannythetrucker Thank this. -
Don't you maen Hydrogen Gas?

yeah that may be it, all I know is you don't want to light a match near it.
