I have a 2014 Volvo with a Cummins 500 with the SCRs DEF system. I am having problems filling the DEF tank. The pump keeps shutting off making it near impossible to fill the tank. I have replaced the filler tube screen and it still causes problems. I was also told to wipe off the nozzle before trying to pump. Is any one else having the same problems or have any suggestions.

I drive a multitude of trucks weekly and have experienced the same thing with all of them but the Volvo seems the most inclined..
if you have a good idea that it needs what the gauge says it needs then you have no choice but to be persistant and go SLOW..
option is to fill a gallon jug and get a funnel and pour it into tank after filling jug..
maybe put the funnel into tank and pump into funnel? -
Make sure the nozzle is seated snugly in the filler tube - and go slow, or kink the fuel line to restrict flow - the pumps are a PITA at best to operate.

There is a magnet in the receiver hole (usually blue in color) get a circular magnet which will fit over nozzle and it will activate the metal ball in the nozzle to stay open (also why the nozzle is aluminum ) should fix it.

I've noticed the same problem some pumps are worse than others. FlyingJ in Rawlins Wy furthest pump to the east will fill it till it starts runnin on the ground. Haven't found a pump at a Loves that cooperates. Worst one I've found was the one @T/A in Rawlins.

The problem is the strength of the magnet on your tank and the build up of gunk on the inside of the nozzle and ball. Love's at the 211 on the 35 in Oklahoma has a one of the inserts from a tank that holds the magnet because their pumps are real bad. Just sometime walk into the store and ask the clerk if they have a magnet for the Def pump you might be surprised how many actually have one.
dirthaller Thanks this. -
That makes sense and would be an easy fix. Where can I get a circular magnet of that size?

Hardware store or grainger, or truck salvage should have the inserts,or just ask to yank one out of junk tank.

I have had success by pulling the hose out far enough to place over shoulder when filling
Works well 8 out 10
