So i'm about to start a gig with a private carrier pulling trailers to trade shows, conventions, concerts, rodeos, etc. I really didn't think anything of it till earlier today when i was asked what the difference between the two was. I mean the company owns everything on the trailers (no hazmat), the trailers themselves and the trucks (and me i guess lol.)

I won't have any BOL's or anything like that just contact info for the location i'm headed to and the hotel i'll be staying at. i will have the standard cab cards, ins, permits when needed.

What am i missing if anything?

    thanks,

    teq.

pro's and con's. one thing is with a for hire carrier you can point to the revenue you generate with the truck to establish value. A private carrier is always going to look at you and the truck as strictly an expense. But if they provide good equipment and you like the job go for it !

can't complain too much about the pay what i like is they put us up in hotels every night we are on the road and since it's salary, i bank 2 days off for every 7 days out.

just not sure what to expect when DOT asks for BOL's and my reply is "BOL's we don't need no stinking BOL's."

you will still need a BOL, and when asked for 1 it is up to that officer and their own interpretation on how to continue the investigation. good luck

I drove for a Private carrier and never needed a BOL, unless I went into Canada.

Maybe I'm wrong, but it's federal law to have a BOL, the only time that you do not need one is when your M/T , could not find an exemption on private carriers......

A 'private' carrier means 'not for hire'......

Private carriers move their OWN products..Thats It!! No backhauls,No Nothing.

Generally, An invoice(receipt) is all you will get when private trucks move their products.

Here are a few examples of 'private' carriers..
    1.Coca-Cola bottling co.
    2.Benjamin Moore paints
    3.Steelcase office products

you will not need a Bill of Lading because their is no Freight to Collect from...This is NOT considered "Freight"... Its Private products shipped to a "private" buyer

As a 'private' carrier...You do not need an MC#.........Many rules do not apply to private carriers.(CSA scores,FMCSA guidelines).....You do however still need a DOT# and IFTA.

Not if you are not transporting goods---I have quite a few old friends involved in the Motorcycle Industry and over the years--I have helped them on numerous occasions moving their show/display trucks--(since in many cases their actual drivers were marketing employess who had gotten a license and some half assed training--and something was always coming up that they had to take off and handle)
And I would load my own bike at Sturgis(for example) and run the truck home--or to their next event for them--and never had any kind of BOL--even went thru level one inspections--at both Truckee and Shasta--and was never even asked for BOLs--just the standard paperwork--Reg-ifta--ins--etc
and it seems like that is the kind of work the OP is talkin about
    Just my $.02
