hello, we have a cummins ism and it doesnt have a hand pump so its always hard priming them after doing major engine work. I found 2 Compucheck Test Ports on the fuel pump and was wondering if i can prime the engine using a vacuum pump on the Compucheck Test Port. Has anybody ever tried that? or what is the best way to prime the cummins ism engines?

On trucks without a primer pump I have an air fitting that I put in place of the fuel tank vent and use a regulator to put 5-10 psi to the fuel tank.

I've used the compucheck fitting on the fuel pump inlet elbow to prime the system. Works fine with a vacuum pump.

How well does it work with a vacuum pump? do you have to vacuum it for a while? we tried on one of our trucks but it still wouldnt start.

How often are you doing major engine work on this engine that this is a problem?

I use mighty vac hand tool with the small reservoir cup. Fill the cup a few times until the air in the fuel is gone. Works great

I have used the air pressure regulated to 5psi or so many times. I have even used one of those blow guns tapped into air at driver's seat. If you have vents in each tank and unvented caps pinch the little vent hoses shut with Vicegrips, leave one cap on wrap blow gun with a rag and stick it in place of the other fuel cap. If you have an electric lift pump turn key on put air to tank and listen for lift pump to start bogging down as it picks up the fuel. When the pump sounds steady release pressure and remove pliers on vents. Good to go, hopefully. I have removed the compucheck fitting in leu of a bleed screw when I couldn't depress it and do the other stuff at the same time. That was with no electric lift pump.
