I was lucky enough to never need a truck driving school in order to obtain my CDL, so when a friend posed a question to me, I didn't have the answer.

He is a resident of Tennessee, and is planning on going through Prime's driving school. He is under the impression that, at the end of his school, Prime will get him a Missouri CDL.

Does anyone know if this is in fact how it works. While I understand the school is in Missouri, I was always under the impression that you could only obtain a CDL in your state of residence; in this case, that would be Tennessee.

You're correct. .The CDL must be in your state of residence. . There is a time frame to obtain it after passing the skills test..

So you don't have to get the CDL in Missouri, then have it transfered to your home state? You can simply take the skills tests through Prime, then take your a paperwork do the DMV in your home state and get your CDL without taking additional tests?

I went through Primes training and you have to get a Missouri drivers license... The address on the License is Primes Hotel that they own... Then once you get back to your home state you transfer the license... I got screwed by being lied to from the recruiter, My state doesnt allow you to transfer a CDL... You have to do EVERYTHING over again, including written tests, pre trip, backing, driving... Had I have know that I wouldnt have ever gone to prime... I live in Illinois... I would call the Tennessee DMV and see if they let you transfer out of state CDL...

The only experts on this question are the Tennessee DMV. And I have never heard of any state that makes it easier to do anything.

Illinois DMV is on another planet. Many drivers trying to tranfer their CDL to IL fail because they have to do the skills test with a 20' pup trailer. The trailer touches the yellow line one time and you fail. Why would anyone even live in that state? Most people know how corrupt the IL DMV is.

The only honest politician from Illinois, other then my cousin Abe, was John Anderson from Rockford.

I doubt that you were intentionally "lied" to as much as you ran across someone who didn't understand the ramifications of having a residence in IL or MA.

There's been so many scandals in Illinois over fraudulent CDLs that NOW anyone with a CDL issued out-of-state must retake all of the tests in Illinois to ensure that you actually do possess the skills necessary to being a CDL driver.

Here's how Prime handles all of the out-of-state residents. You are given a practical test by a certified third-party examiner... one of Prime's CDL instructors. No, there's nothing wrong with that... it happens in many states to ensure that there is someone in the truck who really knows how to drive one. MODOT routinely sends an examiner along to make sure that everything is being done properly. MODOT issues a Missouri CDL to the driver, and at that point the driver is employed by Prime and advances to the TnT training program. Within 30-days the trainee and trainer are dispatched on a load to the trainees state of residence, and the trainee has the opportunity to transfer his CDL. In the case of Illinois and Massachusetts, the trainee uses the trainers Prime tractor and trailer to retake the practical tests.

IF you can't manage to retake the written and practical tests within a 30-day span and NOT obtain the same results (passing) you really don't belong in the cab of a tractor-trailer.

Mosy states only require you to take the General Knowledge test when transferring a CDL from another state. like when I transferred mine to Indiana I had to take a general written test that everyone takes to get a regular drivers license and then I had to do the General Knowledge for commercial vehicles. My trainer was from Tennessee and I think he said all he had to redo was the written test
