Hi I currently were contact lenses but will soon be employed with an OTR company. I need to purchase a pair of glasses. Instead of buying a separate pair of prescription sunglasses , my 2 choices are to buy a pair of $250+ "Transitions Driveware" lenses at Costco or get some $15 clip-ons from Walmart to attach to a regular pair. If anyone has experience in the past with either of these I would appreciate some info. Thanks!

it's what you can afford, or want to spend.

i wear glasses for reading only, but i can assure you, that at times, they fall off and to the ground they go..you wanna have an expensive pair fall to the ground, or a clip on????

just for backup go cheap...in general, anyone who uses eye glasses, if it is not on your license, be aware that using them during your medical re-certification will put the 'needs glasses' on your physical and the DOT inspectors are picking up on that. ends up as a 'Driver Fitness' violation on the motor carrier's record if you don't have your glasses and will show on your PSP.

I don’t like the clip-ons for several reasons. I too need glasses to drive. I have a plain rx and a sunny rx, as well as a backup (older) plain rx.

But you definitely should have a backup pair in case a pair breaks and if that’s a shaded rx, it will be a problem at nights until you can get home and get another pair.

I’m not up to speed on modern transitions lenses. They may be great or only so so. The money is a lot to lose if you’re hard on glasses.

I use clip-ons. My transition lenses do not darken inside a vehicle, as the uv rays that activate them are blocked by the windows. My lenses are two years old, so be sure to ask the optician if they will work inside a vehicle. The technology may have changed in the past two years.

I cannot use contacts or want to considering some of the industry hazards I go into with high dust etc. Ive always bought powerful frames with springs inside them and the ability to know where to unbend back to straight.

Lenses are non glass, no lines, transitions for weather (Cold snow storms especially in sun) and a couple of other add ons. They can function as safety lenses in a pinch but iffy. Runs me about 700 dollars for a pair.

The main thing is you need 20/40 corrected both eyes, color clarity to standard traffic colors etc and depth perception.

Ive already had a cataract surgery 10 years ago on one. That eye got corrected from 20/omfg down to 20ish up to 24 inches and 20/30 beyond 20 feet. But I still wear no lines bifocals now on that one. (And the other one to maintain balance)

I usually order my frames direct. All I have to do is transfer lenses to them while the eye shop fits or builds new lenses to the old frame which matches. Old set becomes a spare in a holder with me in the truck. I can drive without em and do not carry a vision restriction but it's there.

That's my experience with glasses anyway and CDL. Never a problem usually.

Now if I can find a way to get even with Pa for buying outrageous ugly turn off birth control glasses as a teen... =)

What happens if you wear contacts into a physical but don't tell them? I've got my physical coming up in September and will need my new glasses. Not particularly worried about the requirement, but one less thing to worry about.

My experience with transitions was that they do not darken inside a vehicle. Get a cheap pair of glasses with the anti reflective coating. As far as cheap rx sunglasses go buy them online. I got a pair delivered for 40 bucks.

They generally ask you if you are wearing contacts before you do the Snellen Chart test. And same for at the DMV. I suppose you can lie to them and tell them you’re not wearing contacts.

Drivewear for daytime and cheap clear lenses for nighttime if you can afford both. Otherwise, cheap clear lenses and a cheap polarised clip on.
