I know this out there in a thread somewhere but I haven't been able to find it. Lots of rv forums discuss it but how about big trucks?
Traveling Nebraska to Vegas, no weather concerns, a medium to heavy load (74,000 pds). I-70 is about 60 miles shorter and ergo, an hour quicker. Pretty important in the age of elogs and conserving time. But it means higher altitude in a couple of places meaning longer hillclimbs. Anyone who runs it fairly frequently have an opinion? I drive a company truck and they don't care one way or the other unless weather or weight is a factor (or hauling Lays Potato Chips, LOL!). Leaning to less stressful Wyoming and leave the Colorado Rockies for another time. Thoughts?
Preferred route, I-80 or I-70 over Rockies?

Forecast Information is your friend. The more the better. Sometimes 80 sucks more than 70. Sometimes the other way around. Sometimes it's a push. Then 80 will probably be your better choice

You've never driven through Wyoming have you?

They have come just barely short of eradicating the snow plow in Wyoming. To put it a little more bluntly: Wyo. don't plow their XXXXX roads!
I've been over I70 in a snow storm. I was impressed with Colo. DOT. They really have that freeway covered. Maybe closed for a matter of minutes. If it's for two hours, everybody's hemorrhoids are flared up. They make tons of money in those ski resorts. They must maintain that freeway moving.
I would rather go over I70 in the middle of a snow storm. Than to take I80 on the nicest winter day.
I'm not joking.
EDIT: The only problem with I70 is. You have to deal with the long wide open I70 of Utah. It's a long ways to Beaver. They don't do the best. Or should I say they can't do the best in maintaining that.Gearjammin' Penguin Thanks this. -
All's I know is I've seen 80 closed for 36+ hours and there was never even chain requirements across 70 during the same 36 hours. Yes the grades are pretty significant, but if it's dealing with a few grades or probably sit for 36+ hours in Cheyenne, I'm visiting Vail. Last winter, there were 5 of our trucks leaving the Sacramento area bound for Chicago and points east, all about the same time. I advised them to monitor the situation across WY. I assessed the situation at SLC and actually diverted south at SLC and crossed over Vail.
I was traveling across Ohio before they were able to make it past Cheyenne. Granted that was a unique weather system but they happen like that sometimes. But do what you want. -
bzinger, longbedGTs and HalpinUout Thank this.
