Been wanting one of these for a little bit. Harbor Freight 1400w Predator inverter generator. Weighs about 50 lbs full of fluids, small and light enough to fit in the passenger stepwell, wish it lacked 2 inches of height so it would fit in a Freightliner sidebox, but we can't have everything.

I purchased this because I just had a rear NoX sensor go bad, and a new one from Freightliner cost me $450. Luckily the old one came out without incident so I got my $130 core back without stripping anything in the one box.

Reason I bought this is because, even running 4x Odyssey 31 AGM's for the battery APU, if on a restart you could get about 24 hours before the A/C and inverter running the fridge and all the electronics in the truck would get your voltage down to 12V, causing the shunts to kick on. Summertime in high heat is even worse, might get only 12 hours in full sunlight on a 90 degree day running the AC. Inevitably you would have to start the truck and run the main for 3-4 hours on idle to get another 24 hours of battery voltage. Clogging DPF's, Screwing up sensors and burning a gallon per hour of diesel, while upping your engine hours.

This solves those problems. I have a Xantrex1500HF inverter with shore power wired into the truck. Shore Power is wired to maintain the 4 AGMs for the APU and the 4 AGM's for the start. Selectable through the Xantrex controller for 10A, 20A and 40A shore power input. This little genny won't push the 20A charger, but will maintain the 10A. Keeps the batteries topped off.

Run time is 8 hours at full load on .7 gallons of gasoline. Noise is 64DB, quieter than every APU that I have parked beside. In the cab it sounds like a reefer 3 spots over. A bicycle lock from Walmart for $8 keeps honest people from stealing it. I'll get a more secure box solution welded up with a better mounting location when I get some time at home.

Best thing is, you can pick these up on sale for about $400 if you watch. That is less than one NoX sensor.

Those predators are good little generators.

After you have a more permanent mount set up check and see if the fuel cap is the same size as the 2,000 genmax... if so genmax makes a extended run time kit the adds a 3-6 gl tank with built-in fuel pump... no modification to the generator. Just change the fuel cap, hook the fuel line from the the new cap/fuel pump to any boat fuel tank 3 gl or more and plug the pump into the genurator... done... you fuel tank plus a 3gl boat tank will give you 32hrs non stop run time.... just something to think about. This is the kit..

I also have an battery powered APU. But my APU runns through Xantrex 2500 inverter/ 100 amp charger. I also have 2500 watt generator and if I connect it to my inverter - all my 110 volt loads (Dometic 110 volt AC also) will be powered from generator and the batteries start charging.

It works probably 5-8 hours on a fuel tank, but after generator stops it switch to batteries and it enough until the morning.

    Love my setup)

I have been thinking about adding a couple of these to my system. 12V Ionic Lithium Group 31 | 1800 CCA | LiFePO4 Heavy Duty Diesel Starter Battery
Right now I have 4 AGM starter batteries and 4 AGM for EPU. I understand that these would basically trickle charge the other batteries until they equal out right. So it would be like added 2 more batteries to the system and they have a built in jump start as well. This will most likely be the way I go when I need new batteries for starting. Don't think I would use all 4 Pos for starter incase of cold issues on starting but think it would do fine with 2 and 2 AGM.

That's pretty much exactly how I want to set my truck up, but with the open frame 4550. Much longer run time, and will feed the 20A shorepower. Mine will fit nicely underneath my headache rack, down in between the frame rails.

downside to open frame is they are LOUD. My 3,500 runs at 59db... that equal to normal conversation.. and runs 12hr

look into the one snowwy posted above you from home depot. 4000W will feed a 20A shore power easily and it's 62 db I believe, from home depot.

That's a much better deal than what I paid for my 1400W.

something else to consider is run time.. some like the one 4,000w listed run 4.5 hrs at half load (1,600w) before refill. Others like my 3,500 will run 12hrs before refill

also warranty... Harbor freight is the only one that has a REPLACEMENT. If it breaks for any reason (even if you drop it) just walk in to any harbor freight and walk out with a new one in the box in under 1hr. All the others require it to be sent to a shop for repairs... so would you rather drop you trailer a drive to a harbor freight, exchange a bad for new and drive back to your trailer or drive to a shop and drop it off and wait for it to get fixed, the difference is the warranty.

Remember that portable generators were never designed to do the job we need in the environment that we put them in...

    3500
    11 hours at 25%. That's 750 watts. On 2.3 gallons.

    4000
    4.5 hours at 50%. That's 1600 watts. On 1 gallon. 9 hours on 2 gallons.

Someone mentioned a gas cap with aux tank to add for capacity.

    The specs.
    3500 peak. 3000 continuous. 212 cc motor. 2.3 gallons. 100 pounds. H20xL22.75xW17.3. Cost $800.

Because of it's bigger motor. It does offer electric start.

    4000 peak. 3200 continuous. 145cc motor. 1 gallon. 45 pounds. H17.3xL18.9xW11.4. Cost $480

If the comparison is running time. @25% it's 11 hours to 9 hours. 750 watts to 800 watts.

The only drawback. Is one has to be ordered. But they carry tons of models. Where as the other only carries one brand.

Inventory is easy when it's only one.
