When do you change these? Only one I've ever replaced was on an old international hoping it would help the worn out pump live a bit longer, which it didn't. What do you think?

Hehe. You have nothing to lose, it's a few bucks. But those PS pumps in those go bad a lot. Fliter change won't hurt, but save some money for new pump. Just drive it until the old one dies, unless you have a favorite spot you want to get it changed.
It's almost like a design flaw. -
With International it is something like 500,000 km or something like that. You could change it once a year if you wanted, probably every two years would be fine.

My steering used to get tight when backing up a lot, changed the fluid to synthetic & the filter that is in the reservoir & its been great ever since.
Dave_in_AZ Thanks this. -
Thanks for the help, my steering seems ok, I was just wondering if it was something the experienced reckoned should be on my list of maintenance or ignored hopefully!

I do mine every year, had one come apart and had to replace all the lines and pump. Cheap maintenance.
SLCTrucker Thanks this.
