Hey guys I am having this problem with one of the trucks... driver was grossed at 78,800lbs and made a wrong turn into a tight road. He went over the curb with the steer tires and now when turning left/right with a loaded trailer it makes a very bad popping sound and it does not turn properly anymore, you have to fight with the steering wheel to make it turn properly and it makes every turn even wider than normal. I took it for a try to see what's happening and it's true what the driver said. Front wheels are popping on turns and turning either right or left is very very wide and feels like the wheels are skidding and trying to pull wide....

    Any ideas what's goijg on

    Thanks

Usually when the front end is popping it because the spring bushings are done for, not always the case. It might be your kingpins. Not a mechanic here, just something's I've experienced with front end popping.

Yup grease the front end and take it in for an alignment. Most likely got something outa whack from hitting the curb to hard.

That has the effect of making the wheels turn very wide and feel like skidding?

I can't see it being that simple. Truck was greased this last Friday front to back. It's actually a lot worse than what it seems to sound like. Imagine turning and in the middle of the turn your truck says #### it I'm not turning more than this and decides to go wide...

I'm not sure about the turning part. I was referring to the popping noise. Now back in my younger years we had a driver hit a curb hard and it bent the splines on the steering box. Turned like #### until they fixed the box, might look at the splines on the steering box.

If things are wore out enough a sudden unloading and reloading of the joints cause cause the grease to be shot out thus effecting them and causing them to stick or move when told not to. Could have also tweaked the tierod and knocked the toe out of alignment causing the ill turning your talking about.

Hope you knocked the driver up side the head too just to knock a little sense into him to not curb the truck.

I fought and lost to a railroad switch once. Got caught in the frog, forced the mack out of it. Ruined the entire front end. They yelled. And are still yelling 40 years later.... I never saw that mack again, that particular company was really something with disposal of old tractors ....

5th wheel get's fresh grease every week.... no it's not getting oversteered... this just started happening today after he hit the curb.

Thank God it was the wheel and not the corner of a building! Haha.... that's what I thought it might have been... tie rods

I'm just throwing this out there. But are you sure the diff locks are not in???

Dry pavement with 4 wheel diff locks engaged will give same symptoms
