Hey everyone, I was looking for some info on polishing an aluminum tank. I know there are many different ways to skin a cat but was looking for some opinions on how to return the mirror finish on this 2 year old aluminum tank. What do you think it will take to get the spots off, I'm not sure if they are caused from salt or just regular oxidation. Take a look at these pictures. One is untouched the other is after hand polishing with White Diamond. You can see the one polished with white diamond is shiny but did not remove the "spots" IMG_9163.JPG IMG_9162.JPG

White Lighting at Autozone and a lot of rags and some good old fashioned elbow grease will work every time.

Thanks Mike for the reply! Maybe I need to work it more. The top picture is after I used the same polish you have, it improved the shine but those "spots" remained there.

the only way I got the spots off of my fuel tanks was to sand them down and then polish them out.

Lots of pitting. Started with 36 grit and went to 800. Then run 3 diffrent wheels to a mirror shine. These tanks are 17 years old running in the Midwest. E75C98EC-8393-4CDF-9C70-17B0218B8292.jpeg BCBBEC3B-7CCC-492D-8189-423AD0801E05.jpeg 1B523992-F0AA-44BB-B2D7-B51602581311.jpeg

Mine didn't come out quite as good. I started with 180 grit. Then 360 and finally 600. Then the heavy cutting wheel with black rouge, primary cutting wheel with brown trupoli. Secondary cutting with the green rouge and finally a flannel wheel with the white. Then hand polished with the zephyr 40.

Not sure what to do with the chrome grill surround. Not sure there is even anything to do besides but a new one. It isn't peeling but its got what can only be described as brown spots burnt into it.

And where did you get that electric palm sander? I could only find air ones so settled for a 6 inch oscillating at lowes. But its huge and impossible to get between the top and ends of the tank.
