For those who use Pittsburgh Power Max Mileage additive in your diesel fuel tanks, have you had any success with it?? Any reduction in soot levels and/or increase in fuel mileage?? Came across this additive today and was curious if it actually works..

I would avoid anything PP like the plague if I were you. They're crooks and fraudsters.

I've used it since it came out. I can't speak to the effect on a DPF or check engine lights because my truck doesn't even have a EGR. But I can say without a doubt it works. I changed a turbo 2 years ago, and I wiped off the soot on the propeller with a paper towel. And the soot had the texture similar to talcum powder. I imagine I would have had to use steel wool to get down to metal otherwise.
I have a couple of old turbos in my shop, and I couldn't clean with a paper towel. But they'd been sitting there for 8 years or more, if that makes a difference. I can't say I noticed an increase in mpg, but there has to be if combustion is more complete-just hard to measure 0.1-0.2 mpg increase. I use Max Mileage in everything, and I've noticed a difference. I have a gas/oil mixture weedeater that would smoke bad under heavy load for a little while. And now, no more. I use it in a 1987 Dodge pickup with a carburetor, and it starts a little easier without cranking as much.

From everything I've read and hearing the experiences of people I know who use it it DOES work for keeping emissions systems clean including APU's and bunk heaters. Supposedly your troubles with soot build up and NOX sensors, etc. will go away.

But I have not heard anyone say it increases mileage as the name would suggest.

This from Howes. Howes also has a Fuel Savings Calculator on their website based on a 5% increase in economy. If one would get the 5% it more than pays for itself.
Defender’s state-of-the-art IDX4 Detergent both cleans and prevents all deposits, including Internal Diesel Injector Deposits (IDID), from forming on your injectors. Additionally, this alcohol-free injector cleaner safely removes water, leaving only pure fuel to burn. Diesel Defender also guarantees a minimum 5% increase in your fuel economy.

Everyone has different opinions on additives, I for one only use Power Source Diesel Kleen. I purchase it by the case on eBay. I tried Howes and it didn’t do squat, Lucas is overrated and overpriced.

Fuel mileage gains of 5% seem totally unrealistic. What I learned is diesel engines, when running properly, burn 98% of fuel. You can only get 2% more fuel burned, which is impossible I gathered.

Snake oil. Did absolutely nothing for my truck. Big waste of money.
