    What's up guys?

Been lurking here reading for a while now n decided to finally make a post. I'll be starting CDL school tomorrow to get my class A and all endorsements. I will also be applying for my TWIC card as well. I have def decided that tankers is what I want to pursue after getting my license. Due to family situations, OTR is pretty much out of the question. I could probably do a regional, or dedicated position if it got me home fairly often, as in every weekend. I'd much prefer local work (as I'm sure all of us would haha) and was seeing if anyone in the Phoenix area had recommendations on companies to possibly inquire with about a job. Don't mind working nights, days, long hours... Am fully expecting the crap shifts as all newbs have to pay their dues.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

    signed,
    a wanna be tanker driver

Thanks for the quick reply Chinatown! I'd like to get into the fuel hauling side of tankers (gas/diesel)... Would working for one of the propane companies count as tanker experience in the eyes of a fuel hauling company? I just want to keep progressing forward with my soon to be career and want to take the appropriate steps to get me where I want to be.

    Thanks again!

Propane would be good if the equipment is tractor/trailer. I don't think Ferrellgas or Airgas uses tractor/trailers.

There's some asphalt plants in Phoenix that use tankers; I've hauled acid into a couple of them in the past.

Info: the acid is mixed with asphalt so it will keep its shape in hot weather. Those deep grooves you see in asphalt, especially in hot climates, are permanent unless acid is mixed with the asphalt. The asphalt will still groove, but will return to it's flat surface in an hour or so.

Trimac hires new CDL grads in Phoenix; good place to get experience.

    Clean Harbors is hazmat/tanker.

Many companies will hire new CDL grads but don't advertise it. Dress sharp and apply in person with that CDL and the proper endorsements.

You're a good man, Chinatown. It's rare that people will help out a newb like myself with out being a smart ### or condescending. I will most def look into Trimac! Judging by the pic, it looks like they have local work since they have that nice, shiny daycab Freightshaker.

    Thanks man!

That picture is a local Phoenix fuel company, UPT. Get that CDL and give them a visit.
    Trimac is good also.

Just as an alternative, consider hauling milk. There are several local outfits in the Phoenix area.

    Arizona Milk Transport
    Pipho
    Desert Milk Transport

Milk doesn't explode, corrode or burn and if you spill any of it it's not really a major environmental issue. Sanitation is extremely important!

Downside of it is that 'the girls' (cows) don't really know from nights, weekends or holidays. All they know is when it's time to milk!

Milk hauling does require a certification from the AZ Ag. Dept. but it's not a big deal to get.

It does take a bit of practice to get the shift points down- milk is hauled in smooth-bore tanks (no baffles) so it will handle a bit differently.

It's not a bad way to go if you don't mind the hours and you can be home every day. Pays pretty well too.
